Rather new to my style - help getting a fit

So, I'm sort of on a budget with clothes, and just in the last year started to find my style. I'm a chubby guy, and find that well-fitting clothes make me look so much better, but I have tried on a few button-ups and dress shirts recently only to discover that the arm pits are kind of low, and it is to the point that I can't really raise my arms for fear of ripping the fabric. Do you guys have any tips or suggestions on how I can remedy this situation? I have checked in around here and we don't really have any tailors, only a laundry service and I'm not sure how I feel about them doing adjustments on a 50-100 dollar shirt.

You can't really tailor the armhole of a shirt. What you have learned is that most RTW shirts have very low armholes to fit a wide variety of people. The down side is they pull when you lift your arms. Pay a bit more and get better fitting RTW shirts or, better, still, get some MTM shirts using some of the vendors on this site.
