Stupid question, but how good is Meltonian Shoe Cream as a shoe polish? Is the idea to first apply the cream and then the polish (Kiwi / Lincoln) or will the Meltonian cream do a good enough job by itself?

Thanks,

The cream moisturizes the leather, which is good. It also adds pigment, which can be good or bad, depending on your wants. Wax you can always strip off, but cream's pigment gets into the leather. Cream will never produce the high shine that wax can. Crucially, it does not protect against scuffs, which wax does (to a limited degree).

These days I always combine a first layer of neutral cream followed up by the wax color of choice. This way I get the moisturizing benefits of the cream and gloss shine of the wax.

So would you suggest that I skip the cream altogether? Or should I first apply a layer of cream and then follow-up with a couple of layers of wax polish?

Thanks

When you use cream definitely put it on first. It's probably not necessary to use cream every time, but once in a while is good for the shoes. Pigment issues are a concern more with light than dark colored shoes. If you are worried that cream may change the color of your shoes in a way you don't want, then use neutral cream. Your shoes do need a "drink" every once in a while.

I fond cream much easier to apply and use it after every wear, I use wax maybe once every 5-6 wears. I'm a big fan of Collonil , high shine that approaches wax [as long as you are not a spit polish fan] with all the benefits of a cream

Although one should be careful and "test" the neutral cream in a small, relatively unobtrusive spot. Neutral cream can change the color of lighter-colored leather.

I use this a lot. Effective performance but interesting smell.

I've found a good shoe guy at the local Nordies and they swear by Lincoln.

I almost always use the AE cream polish that comes in the tube. I'm not sure who makes it, but I've heard it was Collonil in the past.

Everyonce in a while I use a meltonian cream (or the AE equivalent), and sometimes on certain shoes I will do a hard wax polish. But usually, the AE tube is what I use.
