I don't own any Chinese manufactured ones, but have a couple of pairs produced in Thailand and several made in Vietnam. The Vietnamese ones vary from plasticy to quite decent. I've only handled current Made in England ones, not worn them - the leather was still cheap corrected-grain, and I couldn't justify the huge price difference based for a minimal step up in quality. To be honest the Made in England ones I was buying in the late 80's weren't great quality either...

I like the style and the soles work well on icy pavements. There are certainly better quality boots out there though.

Doc Martens are comfortable and look good. Unfortunately the leather is low quality in these days.

I own a pair of Made in England Docs, bought in 2012. The quality of the leather is cheap. After two month of wear, it already started cracking. I still have a pair from the early 90’s that is in a better condition than the new ones. Even back then, the leather has never been nice or soft, but at least hard wearing. They were work boots after all.

Yeah unfortunately they've gotten pretty shitty. I'd have to find some on sale under $50 to even consider gabbing a pair these days.

Mine are made in Vietnam. I guess I used MIC as a sort of predjudiced summary.. shog[1].gif

For me I think the weird shape of the foot bed, sort of concave, is the main irritation. I know we have talked about Solovair before, but are those better? Goodyear welted I think, but..

The Made in England Docs are absurdly overpriced. They run 40,000 yen here at the DM store. I wanted to buy some Siano Docs for my wife but they felt like garbage in my hands, shame because they're pretty cute and my wife likes em.

Makes it worse thinking how I paid that same amount of money for brand new Tricker's Stows.

I've not noticed a problem with footbeds - mine have a raised area under the arch. I've not worn Solovair/NPS since the mid 80's but they appear to be similar quality to the MIE DMs - better, but not great leather and better priced.

I think Margaret Howell is using Solovair for the MHL shoes/boots. Like the monkey boots http://www.margarethowell.co.uk/men-2/shoes/mhl-monkey-boot-heavy-leather-black

I've had mono black docs for 1.5 years, wearing them once a week or so and I'm reluctantly (because I now don't have any black shoes) finally giving up on them. They're just too uncomfortable to persevere with.

The pair that I've got are from the early 90's I believe, and super comfy. Like others have said, the leather isn't top notch, but they are made to take a beating. The crap they put out now is not even comparable to the vintage English made variety. I see so many kids walking around campus with the modern Chinese versions and the leather is literally caking off. You can spot em from a mile away.

They probably are. The two major English footwear companies producing (non-dress shoe) footwear for other companies are NPS(Solovair is part of NPS) and Sanders.

Does anybody know who stocks those MHL derby boots in the US? They look like they could be a nice alternative.

The US solovair site has the monkey boots but with contrast stitching. MHL derby boots are only sold from the MH store, you have to e-mail them. Shipping is £25, they don't take off VAT, you have to file a claim which takes 2-3 months. The MHL version uses better leather than the solovair ones.
