I mean the combat system was different in Tactics, but the story was as fleshed out and in line with any of the other FFs if you care about that kind of thing. Great cut scenes as well. It was just an incredibly fun game that had a high degree of execution in most areas imo.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. Actually I don't think I've ever actually beaten any FF except for Tactics. Maybe 6.... I remember taking on Sephiroth too early in 7 and fought him for 1 hr before i crunched the math and realized he was outhealing all my damage and never played again.

With Tactics, I found the game started off really hard. Every boss battle I'd win I would barely be clinging to life by the end. I'd spend a lot of time getting into random encounters in order to boost my HP/MP, etc. Because of this, I don't really remember the story all that well, as too much time would pass between chapters. Also, once you reach a certain part of the game, it becomes too easy. The final boss is really lame, and when it tells you "congratulations! This game is complete!", it's like what?! That was abrupt.

For Sephiroth, it really helps if you have Knights of the Round. You can destroy his first from casting it once.

Lol, you thought FFT was hard? I got to the boss of act 3 without realizing/figuring out how to change jobs so I was going with like Squires/Item Class and then it was like yeah okay this guy is not beatable that way. Set it aside for months until a guide was written in English and I figured oh... jobs yeah those are cool. Vagaries of buying it in Japan on release day :(

Yeah I was playing a pirated copy of the original japanese version of FF7 before the US version came out when the Aerith ghost was in and there was only Black Weapons. The translated guide on breeding chocobos was incomplete and after weeks of trying I gave up on making a blue chocobo or whatever so Knights of the Round become not an option :( I had the green one I think, but without the blue I don't think I could have made it down to gold.

I only play video games that feature characters with hand tattoos.

The game was hard. At least it was on the Playstation. Not impossible, just more of a challenge. Certainly harder than FFVII, whose combat system doesn't require much strategy. I think the game gets bogged down in the job system, a bit.
