I wouldn't take it as back handed, i think it was meant as a genuine and pure compliment.  You put together a fit that looks great on you using OTR items that are lower priced on the spectrum of things.  To me, that is the ultimate ability in menswear - having the taste and knowledge to look as well fit as someone who paid a lot more money.
