Certainly that was the, um, "classical" view, to be sure ...
Sounds like a great plan. Just keep the advice shared by Cox in mind, and you won't go wrong!
I think the fear of grey jackets has some justification in a limited wardrobe. In such a circumstance, they may not be the best choice, but with a good collection of jackets, there's no reason to avoid them, IMHO.
You, sir, ably add to the body of evidence suggesting that the grey jacket can be donned with good results.
What do you do with your hat when you are indoors?
I used to wear a hat every day. There used to be hat check rooms, hat racks, places under chairs in restaurants to put hats, and porters on trains used to have hat bags to put hats into while on the train. Now, it seems like all the places that hats used to go when men went indoors are gone.
Things are so bad now that you see men wearing hats indoors, and (worst of all) wearing hats while talking to ladies.
Yes, unfortunately, wearing a hat can be difficult nowadays for exactly the reasons you point out. It is for these very reasons that I wear hats less frequently than I otherwise would. However, I still enjoy and find many reasons that outweigh the obvious inconveniences of hat wearing.
Fortunately wearing a hat during my commute to and from work presents none of the inconveniences mentioned. I have a dedicated place for my hats at the office and don't consider it a faux pas to keep my hat on while aboard the train for an 8-10 minute journey. At the same time, I do concede that I limit hat wearing during leisure time to occasions when I know I'll be outdoors for a good part of the day.

@Claghorn, hmm...all four items on their own are lovey, however i don´t feel the combination. In my book, the tie could have been more darker to better set off the coat. Others might surely disagree and i nitpicking, but that´s just how this forum works, right? :-)
Today, strolling in a solaro DB...
While it might seem that the coat is a bit too snug, IRL it isn´t. It´s just how the fabric doesn´t drape as grafecully as my woolen suits...it doesn´t bother me too much, anyhow.
