Monkeyface's story & photo reminded me: last time I was at a beach, I was in a suit too. I think. Might have been an odd jacket & tie. Can't remember for sure. I'd been working that day and a colleague & I had a couple of spare hours before dinner and since we happened to be working near a nice beach and it was a sunny day, it would have been a shame not to go. The point behind this random anecdote is that clothes are ultimately just clothes. If you end up needed to adapt to an unexpected setting, just take it in your stride. Or, do as I did, take off the jacket & tie, roll your trousers up and go for a paddle in the sea!

There is an inherent contradiciton for at least some of us in WAYWRN, in that we've fairly comfortably settled into a preferred mode of dress and yet we happily offer up our outfits for judgement by others, even though we're unlikely to make major changes to our styles. It's easy to brush this contradiciton off as simple narcissism and I'm sure it plays its part, but there's also an aspect of liking clothes/styles enough to enjoy sharing them with others. When the hobby gets to this stage, if others enjoy it too, that's appreciated but other suggestions are quite likely to be politely ignored or gently set aside. For example, there's no fundamental reason for Tibor to wear DB suits to the beach, or for crusty to wear elaborate outfits to work in IT, and even I could easily go tieless and casual every day (and as has been seen in thread recently, I often do in summer though it does have a subtle impact on interpersonal interactions such that I have to modify my interview style slightly to compensate). There are many more examples; my reading is there are relatively few (not zero though) regular posters for whom their posting in this thread is genuinely, in their heart of hearts, about learning about clothes. For the rest of us, the outfit is more about personal satisfaction and less about others. Few readers genuinely have to dress a particular way, and for those pure utilitarians, they read, learn, and leave. The rest of us just enjoy messing around in nice clothes, so it seems slightly daft to comment when it seems a little out of place for a particular setting. If they were going to change their style (as opposed to iteratively refining/modifying silhouettes/details/etc) and they're a regular poster, they'd probably have done so by now (stitchy is a good example of this).



Anyway, back to pics, and another knit tie fit for the weekly challenge (though I think I'll keep yesterday's as my actual entry):
