Like so may others, I did my experimenting in college.  Shit got real weird with the hard three back in the day...

I wish I did.  I only have fine wale.  The last time I wore this jacket, I wore some olive green fine wale cords.  What color did you have in mind?  I've been looking to get a pair.

That's a good color. Chestnut, chocolate, too.

I thrifted a Samuelsohn jacket in the very same fabric a while ago. It's a 90% wool/10% cashmere, right? I love the fabric! I've been lazying-out so it's still waiting to go to the tailor to get slimmed down though.

What made you change your mind? I thought ties were really not fitting in your work environment?

kulata, count me in the hard-3 team! If the cut is right (like this fine example) and not reminescent of the 90's, I'm loving 3 buttons jackets with the top 2 buttons buttoned.

Kinda hard to blame the wardrobe dept. seeing as Grant had wardrobe 'approval' on his films beginning in the early 40s. Most of the clothes he wore on film came from his own wardrobe.

That's just a trick of the lighting. The wheelbarrow is gray.

3B aside, I think the main issue here is lacking contrast between jacket and pants. Dark grey flannel would have been my choice, like this it looks a little washed out.

You could go neutral, for this jacket in a light color like off-white; or crazy, say, (picking up the thin stripe in the jacket) dark red.
