Is there some service I can pay to spit shine my shoes? Because I'm terrible at it AND don't enjoy it.
Feel free to PM with the answer, and thanks in advance.
There are two issues here. The first is that you don't enjoy it. In that case you shouldn't do it. Get someone else to shine them. Your clothes are supposed to make you happy. If they don't, you're doing it wrong. (Nice fit, by the way.)
The other issue issue, for those who don't mind the process, is how to do it. This response is meant for those people.
Applying cream to the shoe is straightforward and doesn’t need much explanation. Getting a good shine on the toe with a wax is a bit more complicated. Here’s my method. I don't doubt that there are other equally effective ones.
(1) Wrap cotton cloth around your 1st finger of your dominant hand.
(2) Get a small amount of wax (no larger than a dime) on the tip of the finger. I prefer Saphir; others might have different preferences.
(3) Put one drop of water on the shoe using a bare finger of the other hand.
(3) Apply light pressure in a circular motion on the part of the shoe with the water, quickly mixing it with the wax. Don’t try to cover the entire toe, only as much as can be covered completely by the dime-sized bit of polish (I find this will cover about half the toe). Keep it up until a shine begins to develop, gradually decreasing the pressure. Repeat for the remaining portions of the toes. At the end, when it’s completely dry, I exhale on it to fog it up and give it a final very light final buff.
Getting a real mirror shine on a captoe will usually require several layers as described above, and I’ve found it best not to try to do all that at one sitting. What I do is take the pair of shoes I’m working on out of rotation for a week or so, hide them beneath an end table next to one of the sofas in my living room, and put another layer on whilst watching the evening news on TV. I actually find the activity rather relaxing. Others, obviously, might feel different.
