My wonderful GF is taking me to Lousiville for a few days as a birthday present. She has the hotel reservations made. We are visiting a winery and going to the Maker's Mark distillery, something I have wanted to do for a long time. I am looking forward to dipping my own bottle there. What else is there to do In Louisville? I am open to your ideas for restaurants, bars, stores and museums. What gems do you gents know about that you can pass on? Where can i get a good mint julep? We are staying at the galt house hotel. Thanks for the help!!!!

It's been too long since I visited old Louisville but it's a great city, lots of old architecture downtown. Unfortunately I can't tell you much "current" about it, except that I'm sure the Speed Museum is still excellent and worth a visit. I remember that Bakery Square used to be a wonderful little specialty shopping area on the outskirts of downtown, in a neighborhood very near some of the very unusual narrow, deep homes called "shotgun houses." When I visited Louisville the Galleria was a nice downtown shopping complex. Bacon's and Stewart's were the downtown department stores, but I'm sure both are gone now and probably shopping directly within downtown Louisville is pretty barren now. "Back in the day" Oxmoor Center was the leading suburban shopping mall, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. Years ago, TARC (the city bus system) was excellent and ran on major routes until 1 or 2 am, but not sure anymore. There is a beautiful performing arts center in downtown Louisville, but I'm not sure of its name. Really great acoustics as I recall. There were some fine old homes on Eastern Parkway.
The Water Tower was an interesting architectural landmark and included an art gallery as I recall. I hope this helps!

I've just driven through Louisville when I went down to Kentucky with some family friends, but I'd check out the Louisville Slugger factory. I'm pretty sure they have a museum and some cool stuff there. Not sure if you're into baseball or not though.

On an aside, I noticed that you have as your location Hamtramck. Awesome! I was born there and lived there as a baby for a time, on Charest. My aunt and cousins still live on St. Aubin and my grandma lived on Holmes until she died. My dad worked as a handyman and gofer at Krot funeral home when he was a kid/teenager. Great crazy ass town.

My wife and I were just in Louisville last weekend celebrating our wedding anniversary. If you like Italian food, check out Volare. We had a great meal there:

We stayed at the 21C, which is billed as a "museum hotel." If you like contemporary art, it's worth a quick stop there (just down the street from the Slugger Museum) to check out the art in the lobby and in the adjacent museum space (all free, by the way). There is a tiny gift shop with cool design objects, and next door your can get a high-end cocktail at Proof on Main:

Visiting Loretto? Man after my own heart. I'd kill to visit it some day and see my name on one of the barrels. Please take photos and post them on here when you get back.

A friend told me lives in the area said the Maker's restaurant in Louisville is generally considered overpriced and lacking quality. Her recommendation is to eat at one of the restaurants nearby (she named on specifically but I don't recall which) and head to Makers' for the bar, desserts, and cigars.

Yeah find some better bourbon than maker's mark alot of the good stuff i have been told is found quite easily in that area. next time i am in the USA i plan to go to that region.
some of the rye they produce there is pretty good but still for the price point the better bourbons are prefered.
