Hi there StyleForum -
I want to introduce you to our menswear shop in Oakland, CA - Standard & Strange.
What we carry: Our focus is on true-to-origin goods. Most of our brands are made in the USA, but we also carry a few brands from around the world that we feel represent some of the best work their countries can do.
From the USA we have: Rogue Territory, Rising Sun, Tellason, Rancourt, Red Wing, Apolis, Teranishi, Makr, DSPTCH, DodoCase, Aloha Sunday, Blade + Blue, Topo, Filson; and a few more.
In addition, we've got Naked and Famous, as well as Reigning Champ from Canada; Private White VC and Tender Co. from the UK; Chup from Japan.
Our name comes from a passage in the Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs, specifically:
"Cities, however, are the natural homes of supermarkets and standard movie houses plus delicatessens, Viennese bakeries, foreign groceries, art movies, and so on, all of which can be found co-existing, the standard with the strange, the large with the small."
We chose the name because our spot is the second rebirth of the municipal stables that make up Temescal Alley. After Oakland quit using horses to pull carts through the Caldecott Tunnel, the stables sat empty until they were repurposed as storage lockers, before being turned around again for retail.
Our store is still small (450sq. ft), and we're very service-oriented. We keep a few bottles of nice whiskey behind the counter for folks to enjoy - you don't have to buy anything, just ask and be friendly. The whole alley is worth stopping by, we've got a great donut shop behind us, a fantastic coffee shop across from up, and of course, the barbershop that really got the party rolling in the alley.
A little about me: I've been in and out of retail for a long time, mostly in the bike industry. Before we started the store, Neil (StandardNeil on here) and I founded another company, Cedar Cycling, and worked on the manufacturing side of things.
Full ecommerce is coming soon!
