Standard and Strange - Official Affiliate Thread

Hi there StyleForum -

I want to introduce you to our menswear shop in Oakland, CA - Standard & Strange.

What we carry: Our focus is on true-to-origin goods. Most of our brands are made in the USA, but we also carry a few brands from around the world that we feel represent some of the best work their countries can do.

From the USA we have: Rogue Territory, Rising Sun, Tellason, Rancourt, Red Wing, Apolis, Teranishi, Makr, DSPTCH, DodoCase, Aloha Sunday, Blade + Blue, Topo, Filson; and a few more.

In addition, we've got Naked and Famous, as well as Reigning Champ from Canada; Private White VC and Tender Co. from the UK; Chup from Japan.

Our name comes from a passage in the Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs, specifically:

"Cities, however, are the natural homes of supermarkets and standard movie houses plus delicatessens, Viennese bakeries, foreign groceries, art movies, and so on, all of which can be found co-existing, the standard with the strange, the large with the small."

We chose the name because our spot is the second rebirth of the municipal stables that make up Temescal Alley. After Oakland quit using horses to pull carts through the Caldecott Tunnel, the stables sat empty until they were repurposed as storage lockers, before being turned around again for retail.

Our store is still small (450sq. ft), and we're very service-oriented. We keep a few bottles of nice whiskey behind the counter for folks to enjoy - you don't have to buy anything, just ask and be friendly. The whole alley is worth stopping by, we've got a great donut shop behind us, a fantastic coffee shop across from up, and of course, the barbershop that really got the party rolling in the alley.

A little about me:  I've been in and out of retail for a long time, mostly in the bike industry.  Before we started the store, Neil (StandardNeil on here) and I founded another company, Cedar Cycling, and worked on the manufacturing side of things.

You can find us on the web at: StandardAndStrange.com, and of course we're kicking around facebook and instagram.

Full ecommerce is coming soon!

Welcome to the forum.  Really looking forward to seeing your full website. Also, for anyone who wants to know, Dandelion chocolate is really, really, delicious.  It's actually one of my favorite.  Will you guys be able to ship this even in the summer?

Cheers,

Fok.

Thanks guys.  I completely forgot to mention our brands from the UK:  Tender Co. and Private White VC.   Also, left out Naked & Famous and Reigning Champ from Canada; and Chup socks from Japan.

Standard & Strange was my favorite menswear store in the Bay Area when I lived there.  Of course I would find out about the free whiskey after I move to Southern California.  When will the web store go live?

I managed to miss this place while I was out in the area for both school (and work after). shog[1].gif

We're looking into this - we have to ship with an ice pack and spend more time taping up the packages. If we get enough requests and do it there will be a small additional charge. We're also going to stock Askinosie chocolate in-store only soon.

...aaaand, I guess at this point, I should probably introduce myself.

Hello all,

I'm Jonathan - as the Operations Manager here at Standard & Strange, I'm likely to be the one you most often hear from, be it on SF or via email.

Having relocated to the Bay Area from London a little under 7 years ago, I found myself managing a bicycle shop for some time before eventually being poached earlier this year to take on the role in which I am now currently employed.

Before leaving the UK, I spent some time working in fashion retail, most notably at Offspring (the sneaker store) and Diesel in London and at Dogfish in Cambridge and Norwich. For anyone familiar with East London, I also spent some time tending bar at The Dragon when it was on Leonard Street (back before they knocked it down and replaced it with a bunch of apartments and a coffee roastery).

As you might guess from my previous employment, I do quite like cycling and my interests outside of work include that, plus catching movies in theaters, day hikes and repeating everything I say slowly in order that Americans may decipher my accent.

Having spent 36 years of my life without any form of driving license, I've finally caved and am shortly to purchase my first motorcycle. This endeavor may yet end in either wonderment or disaster.

Any questions you have, fire 'em at me. Here's a shot of me looking suitably pensive in, from top to bottom, Rising Sun & Co., Private White VC, Tender Co. and Red WIng:

This week we've got two new lines on the floor:

Reigning Champ from Canada.  I probably don't need to go into detail about why we picked RC for our knitwear.   We're carrying a crew, zip hoody, and pullover hoody for the tops, and both a slim sweatpant and sweatshort for bottoms.

Original Chippewa.  The first of two styles we will be stocking is the 4 eyelet plain-toe oxford in cordovan (color, not horse-butt) leather. Great, simple, comfy shoe.

If you're local to us, this coming Friday night we're having a party with Filson, Westland Distillery, and Calicraft Brewing.

Door prize is going to be a Filson Restoration Department duffle bag - no purchase necessary, just show up and drink some whiskey, and win a Filson bag.

Thanks, kiya!   Neil just picked up some Ironhearts from SE for motor-bike riding.
