Their was an article in yesterdays Wall Street Journal on Narragansett beer. Any of you east-coasters try it? If so how does it taste and do you know of any liquor (package) stores that will ship it to Minnesota.
Thanks

I've had their IPA, it was pretty good.

It tastes like watery beer. No reason in my mind to pay for it and shipping if it's not available locally. The 'gansett is no good!

I'll have to look at the article, but if t-jack is drinking 'their IPA' I don't think we're all on the same page.

The original Narraganssett was a RI brewed lager much like Schlitz, Bud, Iron City, Ranier, Stroh's, etc. It's the beer Robert Shaw is drinking in the "Jaws" scene where he chugs it down and crushes the can while staring at Hooper. In response Richard Dryfeuss glugs down his herbal tea and then, while staring back at Shaw, slowly crushes his empty styrofoam cup.

I thought the original 'Gansett was long defunct - sounds like the name may have been resurrected....

The name was gone for a while and was resurrected. I had some last year when I was in Providence, the bartender said he just got some in stock so I decided to try it out. Wasn't awful, actually smooth but similar to any main level beer.

I must be thinking of something else.

It appeared Monday July 7th, WSJ Page B-4. The beer was resurrected in 2005.

Thanks, I found the article. Sounds like he bought the name back from Pabst(?), brought back the old brewmaster, and engaged in some old-fashioned pavement pounding marketing. It's being brewed in Rochester, w/ hopes for local RI brewing someday. Definitely the original 'style', i.e. not a microbrew, rather a chug-a-lug lager, not that there's anything wrong with that.

P.S. Just remembered Shaw's character: Quint!

'ganny It's just a New England PBR or your standard low-fare beer.

decent beer. i live in ri and the 16oz cans are a good deal

I surf at Narragansett and drink the beer quite often. It's not exactly the best stuff but it's drinkable, kinda skunkish and watery. I prefer tastier beer's like Harpoon or doghead fish IPA's but they sell 14oz cans for like a $1.25 so after just getting out of the ocean it can be somewhat refreshing.
