i'm just starting to play with photoshop and need a little help.

how do i tell it that i want to crop the image to 9x12 (3x4)?

iphoto gives me several options like 3x4, 4x6, 8x10, etc... but i don't see any such function in photoshop.

also, (and i know this is a long shot,) is there a way that i can set the image so it can't be altered by someone else? say, if i e-mail it to someone and i don't want them to be able to change the colors or cropping or anything else.

TIA

Unless your crop comes out perfectly at whatever size you choose, you need to crop it first, then resize/resample the image to fit the print size you want. So first, crop it to the right proportions, then use Image - Size to set the print size (check the resolution).

when you have your crop tool selected, up top there should be two fields, height and width. Put in your dimensions there, and remember to put in the units, because the default is inches, I believe. Also, remember that no matter how big you make your selection, it will make it as big as you choose. So if your selection is tiny, it will blow things up to your chosen size. Like J said, you'll have to resize/resample watching the resolution

The most accurate way to get the crop area you want for your image is to show your rulers (apple-r on Mac, or, I think, command-r on a pc--or, go to the Views menu, and then Rulers), and use the crop tool (a thick-lined box icon with a thin line cutting through it diagonally) from the tool menu at the right.

You can see the marks in the ruler areas at the top and right of the image, when you move your mouse to place, hold down the mouse button, drag, and let go of the crop tool. Then double-click inside the non-shaded area to crop the image.

But you can also go to the Image menu at the top of your screen, and go to Canvas Size. There, you can choose your anchor point on the diagram (center, left corner, etc.) and type in your desired dimensions. A message will come up that your canvas size will be smaller; just click on Proceed.
