Following the "I've heard" method, I've heard much the same thing - there's the historical archetypal divide in Europe along Northern/Protestant/milk-and-beer-consuming areas, versus the Southern/Catholic/water-and-wine areas. Throw in the traditional use of garlic in Southern European cooking, and it should make for a difference. The only groups I've smelt sufficiently to have some "empirical" notion about, are Northern and Southrn Europeans. There is a difference - say, sour milk versus garlic.
