I don't have five suggestions, but I have one that I've been eyeing for a while now -- the Steinhart "Nav B-Chrono II Black Special Edition".

http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/Nav-B-Chrono-II-Black-Special-Edition,665.html

Comes in at 669 EUR (excluding VAT) which is roughly 930 USD.

Isn't this just trying too hard to be a BP?
Nah, the BP's design isn't exclusive, much like the French Type XX and XXI watches or the various UK Mark __ ones. The B-uhr design was originally produced for the Luftwaffe by A. Lange & Söhne, IWC, Laco, Stowa and Wempe. I'd probably just save some cash and with go Stowa if I had the Nazi-watch itch.

Stowa, IWC and Laco (although IWC is definitely over 1k). Stowas are a bit small in comparison to the 55mm originals though so I don't get really hung up on whether they are an original maker or an homage.

Have you looked at the Fashion designer watches great for casual business attire like Calvin Klien , Diesel, Fossil, Guess

The CM side of Styleforum generally stresses quality so those probably wouldn't be widely approved options.

Though it's too late to enter a list to the poll, one watch that I used to own that I've long regretted parting ways with is the Titoni Airmaster Pilot. It costs less than $500, can be had used for a fraction of that, and is from a lesser known Swiss maker of some repute and tradition. Comes with a no-frills automatic/hacking ETA 2824-2 mov't.

Also, though the new design is atrocious looking in my opinion, the older model Tissot Seastar 1000 was a great looking Swiss-made automatic diver's watch. Shouldn't be hard to find one NOS on ebay for ~$500 or so. Here's an image:

Also, for an pared-down looking Flieger that's cheaper than the Stowa, but still with a Swiss movement and German manufacturing, I think Archimede makes a great one. It also comes in both a 39mm and 42mm size, I believe. Here it is:

Sorry for the delay, but I think that Keith T takes this one. We'll start a contest that will meet with a little less ire in a bit, for watches between $1K and $5K. Yes, it's a big range, but I want to give people more latitude for their choices (I think that we'll keep it at top 5, but require at least 25 words telling us the reason for your choice).

Cheers,

Fok.

I am new to watches.

I've not worn a watch in around a decade, before strapping on a timex weekender about 3 months ago.
The only reason I went back to wearing a watch is because in my job, I have to be conscious of the time, and often have to work in secured areas where a cell phone is not allowed. But after wearing a watch again, I'm strangely enjoying it and thinking that I might want to upgrade.

I'm thinking I want to try an automatic.

I saw a Hamilton Khaki King Auto, and I really like the face, heft, and general feel of the watch.

However, I know very little about watches. Seems like even 545 is a lot to spend on something that just tells time, when my cheap timex loses or gains a mere 15 seconds a week or so.

What do I get for 545 dollars that justifies that price (besides the automatic movement) in terms of functionality, and what do you get if you increase your price to 2,000 dollars?

Is there a real benefit in functionality between a 50, 550, and 2500 dollar watch, or is this essentially the equivalent of buying a status symbol or piece of jewelery that also happens to tell time?

I would either increase the price to around 2000 and buy a second hand watch that will retain it's value or decrease the price to about 500 and buy whatever I want.
