Shoulder sizes on a suit

Thread Starter
I know shoulder sizes have been addressed in past posts, however there has never been listed a definitive measure for how far shoulder pads should extend beyond your actual (natural) shoulders.

I was recently told that shoulders on a suit should never protrude more than half an inch past your natural shoulders. What are your opinions on this? I generally like a more slim fit in the shoulders as I am a skinny but athletic guy.

I am really interested in all of your opinions on this subject as (I have been told and read in many columns on this forum) that shoulders matter first for a great fit.

Thanks!

sounds right to me. 1/2 inch or less. do you think that's wrong?

They shouldn't protrude beyond the outer line of your arm, really. If you have big arms but narrowish shoulders, you'll need shoulders that extend out a bit so the sleeves can hang straight past your triceps.

If you have a softer more natural shoulder on the jacket you can get away with a little more, than if it was a sharp square shoulder.
