This is getting too far from the original for me. But I hope you'll like the result!

This. I've always found on substantial leathers that a split back maintains better form. This was most noticeable in my Cyclone and super monza jackets, where the latter sits closer and neater due to the horizontal seam.

Initial impressions of the base jacket, in a small:

Very slim. Much slimmer through the body than my ToJ. About the same as my size 48 Margiela 5 zip at the chest, but slimmer through the waist. I could not zip the thing up. Arms are very slim as well. Much slimmer than my ToJ. Way slimmer than my Marginal. Much tighter, and you could take my blood pressure. Way short though. A full 2" shorter than the other 2 jackets.

Shoulders are more square than the other jackets. As you guys know, the shoulders of the Margiela 5 zip is dropped.

Arm holes are extremely high. I think that at most, we'd take a tiny bit out out the midback.

So is this attributed to the fact that you were given the smaller size? Why are you working of a smaller size anyways vs your normal size?

I think sizing down was a suggestion from Thurston to get a slim fit, easier to tweak as a base.

This is what we thought....taking in the shoulders isn't a problem.  However, once we go even slimmer (slimmer through the body and biceps), we run the risk of a design that fits very few...  Japan has commissioned many slimfit Vansons, but when they get the super slim jackets, few want to wear them...  Do we want to take in the shoulders on the med.-slimfit or proceed with an even slimmer version?

Because a small in the Vanson is equivalent to the 38 Aero, which I have.

Incidentally, Junya also shifts the size further, so his M is the small, tightened up even further. The jacket I am trying on would be a really nice slim fit on someone about 15-20 lbs lighter, and about 2" shorter. I am 175 lbs ans 5'11". Not tiny, but not huge either.

This would not you well then. I feel like Joel Schumacher's Batman, with the nipples.
