With the weather getting hotter again I am reminded again of my long-held lament that skirts are not considered male-appropriate clothing in most of the western world. Particularly on hot summer days, it just seems like it would be incredibly cool and comfortable for weekend wear. I'll cop to some interest in the sartorial possibilities as well.

With more androgynous and gender-neutral themes playing out socially and politically, I figure there may be some designers out there playing with the theme. I'm interested in comfortable, masculine plays on the kilt or sarong. I rarely venture into SWD, but if there's anything at all out there, I'm assuming you guys would know about it.

I'm half Scottish and half-Asian, so there are probably some cultural riffs I could get away with. There's a company making what they call "sport kilts" that look like comfort-optimized cotton kilts in the Scottish tradition that would be golf-appropriate, but they still appear a bit costumey to me. I could also easily get away with something like a Bhutanese gho but that would also be very costumey, and frankly self-defeating in the comfort department - they're long-sleeved and hot as hell.

I'm thinking something as simple as a white linen sarong would be passable with a linen sportshirt or polo and wearable for things like backyard barbecues and lawn parties. And I'm not sure if there are other takes on the theme.

Any comments appreciated.

i could actually see a patterrned sarong -- in stripes, or checks, or plaid -- work better than a pure white one.

Skirts can be cool, Engineered Garments have made some really nice wrap-around-skirt-thingie that look fantastic with some light-washed blue jeans and a white OCBD (though I unfortunately can't seem to find the pic I'm thinking of at the moment)

Skirts without any pants/tights underneath is more unusual, almost all "fashunz"-examples I've seen have had some kind. Well except that japanese(?) dude who used to post some next-level samurai outfits in waywt (maybe
@Parker remembers his name?)

Yohji knows how to show a man in a skirt!
I'm actually looking at buy a wrap skirt from PH AW13, but I need to actually get the money first

Anyway, these are all from SS04, Yohji's infamous "skirt" collection

I wear this Jan Jan Van Essche tunic a lot in warm climates, people just assume I'm going to the mosque or am in some sort of traditional costume, works in asia, ME and west africa. Purely fashion in the western world.

Note that it is a bit longer than the pic shows, this model is probably tall as ****.

Thanks, definitely some good suggestions.

I like the Dries van Noten looks; they recall kilts but are distinct enough not to be. The utilikilts are a bit overly derivative IMO; I don't like the front button detailing. They look like something weird dudes would wear to the Renaissance festival.

I don't love the ones intended to be worn with pants. They seem overly affected to my opinion, but then again I'm talking about wearing skirts so hey, MMV. To me this is a bit of a matter of dressing for comfort and wearing pants and a wrap layer seems to defeat the purpose.

One of the challenges appears to be shoes.

Some of the Yamamoto looks, with Japanese/Asian influences but with more conventional tops are interesting looks to me.

These seem like they'd be comfortable and interesting and pull-off-able.

I get a bad feeling out of all this. The way several here have been able to drop a shitload of pics on the topic leads me to believe that a dam will burst some day, perhaps after a Hollywood character wears one in a hit action movie, and next thing we know, guys will be all over Walmart and the rest of middle America in skirts and flip-flops, t-shirts and tats. As if things aren't seedy enough already. :fu:
