Where to stay near/in NYC - cheap

The last thread didn't get too much response, so to recap, me, Bergdorf Goodwill, and Iuruk are meeting up and going to NYC in two weeks. We were hoping to be able to stay with anyone who had spare couches, but it doesn't look like that will work out.

Hotels in NYC are very pricey, according to a recent thread. $400+ a night. We don't want to pay that.

My idea is to stay outside of the city, and take the subway in. We'll also do some thrifting in the outlying area.

Where would be a good location to stay? We'd prefer to stay at a place that is ~$100 for a night (we'd share a room - no problem). Being nearby a place to pick up the subway would also be nice.

Do you recommend reservations for a hotel outside of the city?

Why don't you stay at a cheaper hotel in Manhattan and save the time and $ involved in commuting (especially the nightime cab rides)

Have you looked into places like the Gershwin Hotel? It caters to budget travelers but is well located and is not dodgy (rather cool actually)

Thanks - I sent them an email with a few questions.

Do you think finding a hotel with only two weeks notice will prove difficult?

Also, where would we store a car for the few days we would be in the city, assuming we found a cheap enough place directly in the city.

Yes - I think that will be hard

A car? I didn't realize there was a car involved... I wouldn't know the answer to that. Car parking is generally pretty expensive in NYC

Another budget place close to where I live (and that I've heard recommended before) is Chelsea Lodge

I am flying to Columbus, OH - then we are driving to Philly for a day or two, then to NYC. Thanks for the recommendations. The Chelsea Lodge seems reasonable. So you think trying to park a car while we are in the city for a few days will be a nightmare?

I honestly have no idea but I don't think it's that bad if you plan in advance and pay daily rate (i.e. if you don't use your car while in the city)

check: http://www.nycgarages.com
(the one next to my place in Chelsea seems to be only $20/day?)

You may also park out of town in N Jersey, or Riverdale, or Westchester and take the train in to stay in the city, returning to your car only at the end of the visit.

My plan is to park the car in a Trenton garage, take the NJ Transit Line into Union, and that should put us pretty near our hotel.

You're staying in Union, NJ, you mean? Or grabbing NJT to Penn, NYC?

This is a timely thread for me, as I'm in the City on the night of the 12th, purely by coincidence. I was enthralled by the Gershwin, but they don't have a room that night, hopefully the Chelsea will come through. Whoa, reading up a post I see that's the same day so maybe not...

I have been doing B&Bs and other little places for all my personal travel for a year or so and I will never spend my money at a chain again. Not Ever. The experience is infinitely better, and with the Web you can check almost anyplace out. [/random commentary]

Regards,
Huntsman

With all these illustrious SF visitors in town, we should all meet up for a beer

I meant Penn, pardon my idiocy. I think we're up for whatever meet-ups anyone wants to swing.

Connemara wants to meet up, too. He is all a-twitter with anticipation on AIM. Anyone wanna play Kabbaz and front him train fare? Otherwise he may have to sell his father's wooden mallard collection/horse art on craigslist.
