Ahhhhhhh the start of a new day. I think I'll devote today to Aphex Twin.

And don't knock Grandma's Boy Kent. It's the Half-Baked for a new generation.

just had a meeting with a Gen Y'er - lots of fun. she is basically a secratary, she is in charge of our corporate education and training. so I have 3 new managment level guys coming in for training, and she was telling me how it wasn't the best use of her time to train 3 guys, I should fly them in the next time she is training a group of people. anyway, her boss was in the meeting with us, and then called me right after to apologize - she says "well, you know, these young people, she has a masters degree and thinks she knows everything." and I, aparently, offended her a while back that I asked for her input on a training plan and didn't use everything, even though I used some of her ideas.

****, I would hate to have to manage people as fucked up as this. I hope that the next "sub-generation" is reasonable, so that I can just skip ever having to hire any of these pissers.

What do you consider a "gen y'er"?

I'm under 30, not that far under 30. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps my age, or rather my assumed age, is why it has been so damn hard to break into new areas. People assuming the worst and all that.

maybe. I work in a place with a lot of people who have been in the company for a long time. a lot of people over 40. and I hear a lot of complaining about gen Y'ers. I have only had bad expereince with one, but it seems to fit the stereotype.

I'm the youngest in my division, by far.

Now that I think about it, I do hear some remarks occasionally that make me think it is a "conventional wisdom" to assume people my age are useless. My favorite insult is when a client says to me "thank you for handling this so professionally". Apparently they assume I'll be unprofessional and are pleasantly surprised when they find out otherwise. Many of these people will have longstanding relationships with my boss. So I often feel like I'm reflecting badly on my boss since clients assume I'm some unprofessional idiot, and thus assume my boss hires and retains unprofessional idiots.

A few of my female friends have told me that I dress as if I was 10 or 15 years older than I am. Probably a subconscious adaptation to an environment where youth is considered detrimental.

yeah, well I was in the same boat as you 15 years ago. I had the advantage that my generation had less engative stereotypes, and I was in higher tech than I am now.

good luck.

I had the feeling that this is probably something every generation faces. I'll continue on as I always have, taking advantage of opportunities as I can create them. Things are looking good in the near term (~5 year timespan or so).
