harry crane is awesome. i love his scenes. especially that one.

i also loved how he was told that he is the most dishonest person that jim had worked with. that was a great convo.

media billings are usually like 10x creative so he has some stroke

And then if mad men keeps running for 30 more years, they can have a hilarious story arc where they freak out about whether or not their mainframe is going to be taken out by the Y2K bug!

by 69/70, yes. a commercial might cost 50k to create, the media spend might be 500k against that

Interesting. For a show that tries so hard to get things right that's a pretty big screw up.

i don't know, they have increasingly presented him as a profitable and necessary evil, hence his arrogance.
although i actually thought they were a bit early on geo-targeting/geolocation.

How so? Just because he brings in money doesn't mean he or his department has to be respected.

In OPs review it's never mentioned. If I had a revenue stream of X and one of 10X I'd sure as hell have my OPs review pay more attention to the 10X stream vs. never talking about it. You do see scenes of the partners reviewing business.

i have always got the vibe that people dont really understand his department, and due to that he is often dismissed as being unimportant. "hes just that TV guy."

What's the margin on the media buys though?

I'm assuming they mark them up, but its not the same as charging for creative labor. And it sounds like at this point, creative is still the main driver behind bringing in clients (with the help of accounts). The clients need media services, but they aren't out there looking for firms that specialize in marketing mix or something--this is the first time a client has said anything about a perceived lack of resources in the media department.

Going to need Kunk to weigh in. I too was functioning under the thought that creative was where the $$$ are but he seems to be indicating that's wrong by a large factor.

In season one, they say they mark up media by 15% and that ad buys are 90% of the billing. Of course--if the client believes that any media department is good enough to manage the buys, then even though the profits all come from media...that revenue would never show up if you weren't able to rope them in with talent like Don.

It's all on Draper.
Don't think that just 'cause he's good looking he's not a writer.
Dig.
This is the media department.
They're where 90% of where the client's check goes.
They buy space Newspapers, billboards, television, and my favorite aging whore, radio.
That's the whole shakedown, actually.
All you really need to know.
They Don't sell ideas or campaigns or jingles, they sell media at a 15% markup.
Creative is just window dressing.
It's thrown in for free.

And really, isn't that why they want the big fish clients?

You come up with one great idea for a local car dealer and you get some regional media purchases during the cheap hours. You come up with a decent idea for Chevy and you've got national prime time media buys.

Maybe that is why Lou is "adequate"--If Cutler sees it as a volume business where you don't have to be the best, then he only needs creative good enough to maintain a reputation rather than talent strong enough to build one.
