What do you guys think I should fill this bookcase with?

Hey guys, I just got this bookcase from West Elm, and was hoping some of you would be so kind to give me suggestions on what to fill with - since most of you have beautiful homes/apartments and just a great sense of "fine living"

Here is a picture of it:

I am not sure if it would like better with just a few various items like the picture above or a whole bunch.

Here is what I am thinking so far:

http://www.gadgetell.com/images/0220...lt20060228.jpg (Apple Hi-Fi) - I was thinking I would place it on the very top

http://images.skymall.com/images/pro...102155553m.jpg (Bose Sound Dock - Maybe in that center square, but it might be pointless to put two music devices in it)

-On one of the sections I was thinking about putting some books
-Another some candles

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest that you worry a bit less about what others might think and more about what pleases you. I'm a reader, and I enjoy books as objects, so pretty much an shelving unit I have is likely to be stuffed to bursting with books. But think about what sorts of things you like to be surrounded with, what makes you feel relaxed and "at home". Unless you have a reason to have both an apple and a bose system in the same place, I agree it's kind of pointless. But if you like music, maybe some CD's. Candles are good if you enjoy them. Just experiment, try some different things and see how they feel.

A bookshelf should firstly be filled with books. Other things have their places elsewhere.

My friend wanted to buy that from West Elm; but, she got the similar one which is more horizontal. I like yours better and I like the idea of having vases, bowls, statuettes, etc on a book shelf too.

It's interesting to see how the Carlton bookcase is now confined in a rectangle.

The Carlton is so ugly in pictures, but so cool in real life.

for the price/quality ratio, apple's (and believe me, almost every electronic thing in our house is apple) stuff is really crummy. for the $350 for the apple hifi, you can get SO much better quality/sound without sacrificing aesthetic, you just have to look a bit harder. I've gg to dinner now, but I'll try to post links later

I'm a fan of glass-doored bookcases, especially if they have those half-curtains to protect the books from light.

Uh...books.

Or Precious Moments figurines.

If you're goin for stereo equipment with nice aesthetics, check out Tivoli Audio products: http://www.tivoliaudio.com/home.php Their iPod integrated products are kinda ugly, but you can just as easily hook up the iPod/Dock to an Auxiliary Input on the rear of the better-looking systems

Did you experiment a lot? How did it feel?

what about some books from the SF store

and DVDs/CDs

or a plant?

my suggestion, don't buy an ipod. Instead buy a technics turntable, decent receiver and speaker and around 100 dollars in used vinyl.
Also fill mason jars with different candies (jelly beans, m&m's etc) and place them on your shelf.

Action Figures. Or dolls, if that's your thing.
