New to the site and having trouble matching slacks and shirt to a blazer.

Hi everyone,

I have lurked for a little while on the forum but finally have reason to post. I have just started to build a post college wardrobe moving from graphic tees to actual dress shirts etc. I was at a Banana Republic about a month ago and they had the following blazer marked down and I was able to stack with a 50 percent off coupon. I purchased it on impulse for about 40 dollars. The problem is that I am still very new to matching colors and patterns and could really use some help pairing items to this blazer so any help would be appreciated.

From what I have read through here and other sites is to stick with a light/cream chino or slack and a solid color shirt (not sure if color matters too much). A far as sizing goes I understand that the little bit of pulling at the button means it is too small but I am in the process of losing the last 5-10 lbs I intend to lose so that should clean that up.

Thanks in advance again.

It's a sportcoat, not a blazer, technically speaking

It appears to be in earth-tones, so yes, tan or khaki trousers would work well, as does the solid blue shirt (not keen on the contrast design inside the placket, though).

Yeah I ordered the shirt online and really dislike the placket design. Thanks for the responses I grabbed a sky blue shirt with out the placket design and it paired well with jeans and brown shoes and belt.

If that's a Nautica shirt, I'm wearing the exact same one right now.

There's a splash of color when you wear it open collar in a more casual setting, and it looks perfectly classic when you wear it with a tie. C'mon Andrew Ryan, live a little.

And tan, khaki, olive, or brown trousers are best. Maybe navy, though navy trousers are kind of verboten around here.

Blue or white shirts (with most striped and checked variations thereof) will be fine.

Haha, fair enough. The asymmetry just bugs me

I'm going to go out on a limb here and agree with the navy trousers... and hope no one bans me for it. I rock them with brownish jackets semi-frequently (if blue jeans [pref. dark of course] work with a jacket, how can navy not?). The white shirt rec though - I disagree, white against brown (that is brown, isn't it? my monitor may be fooling me) almost always looks off, no? Ecru if you must, I suppose. Then again, I wear solid blue and blue patterns 100% of the time with any jacket in a shade of brown, personally.

Careful on the patterns - with the jacket being patterned it could potentially end up too busy looking.

I agree on the patterns when I tried them on the windowpane looked bad but gingham check was not too bad IMO. It is a brown on the check with the slightest lean to the orange side. I have navy chinos I may try those with it but everything I found online said Greg jacket navy pants was an atrocity.

The jacket is very casual. Wear with a white OCBD, dark jeans and you will be fine. An ecru shirt would work as well, but the jacket is light enough that white will work fine.

Navy trousers are far from an atrocity, just difficult to pair compared to grey and earth tones. But really, I wear them frequently with brownish jackets - it's just fine, especially casually. A lot of the forum hatred of navy trou is groupthink and ridiculous. Again, see the blue jeans analogy.
