Anyone know if the B&M is still open?

I question the quality of the products - obviously, ties, shirts etc. are done purely by their respective manufacturers (drakes, t&a, etc.) but with respect to tailoring, I am not convinced - I have an overcoat from them, material seems fine, but everything is heavily machine-made & one time the stitching where the sleeve is attached to the shoulder on the inside came undone (its actually a common problem for me), and I had an opportunity to examine the shoulder padding - it wasn't the highest quality stuff like you see from goods of that same pricepoint (I wish I had taken a picture but I did not). Finally, it really is annoying that the buttonholes are all machine-made & all of them are punched through - traditionally, on british tailoring, they make the 2 bottom functioning, and the top 2 just stitched around, leaving room for adjustment.

Other ones I can think of off the top of my head (but they're fairly new):

Haven

Need Supply

FWIW Carson Street's line Deveaux was(is?) more ambitious than most shop lines. Most of the ones mentioned here are essentially men's basics--decently made shirts and pants from known factories but with a house label. Deveaux was aiming to compete more broadly--I think they were intending to wholesale it outside of CSC. CSC also had a house line of #menswear-y shirts and trousers that were decent closer to what haberdash or epaulet or even mashburn do.

All that said I don't know too much about the shuttering of CSC although it seems a part of a broader story that it's hard to make money in midtier retail.

This is paraphrasing a conversation I had with someone who was in the know (so I may be misstating things, mis-remembering etc) but the gist was:

1) The rent at their new place was insanely high

2) They'd just launched an in-house line, which took up peoples' time and responsibility

3) There were a few people involved in Carson Street, some of whom were more interested in the in-house stuff and some who were more interested in the 3rd party retail side. After some people left the people who were remaining didn't have the energy and wherewithal to try to rebuild and they decided the best bet would be to close the doors.

I spoke with one of their employees who worked there in 2014/2015. In addition to what's listed above, their 2016 buy was on the weird side and alienated a lot of their customer base. I heard the people who were working on the house line previously bought #menswear stock (Barena, SNS, Acne) and the party handling 2016 buying got a little too fashion forward. Fashion conscious millennial men are willing to drop $1k -$1.5k on a suit they can wear to work, much less so $3k on a Greg Lauren jacket that makes them look homeless.

Might be oversimplifying a bit, but what he said confirmed my feelings when I walked in there last. I looked around and realized nothing there was for me anymore (a few months prior to their closing).

They didn't start by selling clothing, but Maison Kitsune is fairly successful.

Actually, my understanding is that Greg Lauren was the best or close to best selling brand under CSC 2.0. That may not be saying much, but the point is Greg Lauren has a dedicated customer base, but perhaps not one you can anchor a business around since it is so specific.

Re;. CSC - retail is a hard business with tight margins, and instagram doesn't sell shit.  Return customers, where the money is, are still retained by careful relationship cultivation, aka traditional clienteling.  And in this day and age, good customer service is needed.  It's a grind.  Maybe especially if you are the boss, you need to be on floor doing hard work.  And you can never lose your game face.

From what I understand, there were issues in all of these areas (I saw it even in their now long shuttered affiliate thread) and with the market being as competitive as it is, things just didn't go well.

You mean 80% off sale customers who return half of their orders aren't good for business? puzzled.gif

This may seem like an a--hole comment but even for the closing sale customer service in-store wasn't great (I was a customer before but came in much more when they announced)

they seemed to ignore customers, no signage or letting people walking in know there are discounts on the clothes.

They might have sold much more of those products at 70% if they would communicate with customers on the floor, I'm sure some customers weren't up to date on their latest blog post saying they're shutting down, or their reduced online prices

Yeah dealing with returns suck but it is also part of customer service. At this day and age CS is king.

Amazon has an amazing customer service department. Sure their prices may not be as competitive as they were before but with the services they offer, they will continue to take my money.
