Alden QC has been garbage for quite some time. Not really many US shoes worth considering. Rider boot maybe? That's about it.

I still have 2 pairs of Alden shell, everything is is Carmina/British.

I think it's possible to enjoy the finer things in life (like $400 shoes) without having disdain for people that either can't afford or choose not to enjoy that luxury.

I've purchased AE seconds by just blindly calling and ordering, and had success. Recently, I tried calling to order a pair, and I asked the sales associate to check it for any visible defects, and they all had defects. I spent over an hour and came away empty-handed; maybe it was just a popular one with few seconds. In the end, I decided that the exchange rate plus $50 shipping to Canada, plus duties and taxes, plus the time, wasn't worth it. So I'll just keep looking for them on sale.

And maybe sometime I'll try Meermin, it's just that I'm worried about the sizing.

Of interest to anyone who might be in, or can be in, New York City on Nov 7 (and because I know that half or more of you guys never read the announcements or look at the front page:

B&S has had a ton of sub-$400 Vass lately too. I think I've gotten 4 pairs of Vass off B&S this year. No affiliation with any of these links, but these BNIB Vass are $350:
http://www.styleforum.net/t/507607/final-sale-350-for-bnib-vass-shoes-different-models-and-sizes/0_30

This is BNIB Vass is $425: http://www.styleforum.net/t/508360/vass-44-london-model-antique-cognac-medium-brown-budapest-last-bluchers-derby-shoes-trees-bags-box/0_30

These Budays are all $450: http://www.styleforum.net/t/508401/new-in-box-buday-shoes-for-sale/0_30

Now that AE firsts are almost $400, I can't imagine paying that when options like the above shoes are available.

I'm pretty sure they are shankless. In fact they advertise this as a "feature."

AE shoes are indeed shankless. The 360 degree welt plus a low heel height means the shank is not a requirement.

A little silly to compare retail AE price to B&S price of anyone else. Apples to oranges.

I don't own any AE, by the way.

Maybe, but I've honestly never quite understood that argument. I currently only have two pairs of AEs, but that spot is exactly where the soles of my AE Malverns have failed. Perhaps it's just shoddy glue, but I can't help but suspect that a shank would have given the added support that the sole apparently required there.

The reality is Allen Edmonds is shoddy construction. The shank they use is made out of cardboard. Their prices keep going up too. They were 335 then 365 now 385. At 335 on sale they could be had for low 200s. If only people knew / cared about quality beyond the Goodyear welt.

Just to clarify, not defending AE (never owned any).

Just get real tired of lecturing my friends on why $100 Bally shoes aren't a bargain.

To apologize for the above thread derailment, here's a pretty decent sale at Borghini:
http://www.borghiniclassic.com/eshop/en/sale-men-6?id_category=6&n=167#/

C&J Conistons for 347,54 €, Edward Green Cumberlands for 682,79 €, etc. Gotta get a bit lucky with size though.
