I think it’s less to do with Final Sale here and more to do with-in the way that brands and stores deal with shifting their unsold stock. A lot of the big brands have Outlet Stores dotted throughout the country, so what tends to happen is unless a product has sold badly discounts rarely go above 50%. The stock then moves to the Outlet Stores, usually 2 seasons behind, where often the discounts are not as good as the Retail Store discounts – then those Outlets also have Sales on top of the Outlet price, where you have the chance of getting a great deal. Outside of that many of the brands have what they call Sample Sales (although you don’t find many actual samples at these events) where the goods are sold at crazy discounts, this is where they are often charging cost or less. Paul Smith used to hold some great ones in London where I picked up some incredible bargains. £1300 outwear for £80 or a £1200 Mainline suit for £100.

It is different rules for the Stores, but you tend to find the real discounts in-store and not online. Selfridges for example discount very aggressively as they like to clear their stock for new season with-in a couple of weeks. Some online retailers now have their own online Outlets – OKI-NI for example have an online outlet where old season stock sits there gathering dust!

I used to think that on-line stores in the EU couldn't do that, but recently I discovered that stormfashion (in Copenhagen) officially refuses returns of any discounted item (it's explicitly in their terms and conditions) - reason why I hesitated for what felt like years before getting a pair of Raf Simons pants from them recently (luckily they turned out long enough).

Maybe it's because it's Denmark what with their millions of EU treaty opt-outs.

That sale was even better than the US one.

Was on the train when I saw the Mr P EU drops. Phone ran out of battery. Got to my computer 10 minutes later, ALL of the good accessories (sunglasses / belts in particular) were sold out baldy[1].gif A Friday night when I wish I didn't go to happy hour drinks...

Still some good clothing/shoes at least.

Was about to grab up a few AMI shirts in such haste that I barely realized I already owned them. Glad the EU crowd got some deals this time.

any idea why mrporter's UK site increases prices after I enter a US shipping address? I thought the price will drop with vat removed?

It may depend on the brand, materials, etc....  The VAT decreases the price, but the retail price for the US market, specified by the designer, may be greater.  Also, import laws are pretty complex, and the tariffs associated with products made from different materials can range from about 5% to about 20%, depending on any number of factors.  Mrporter sends goods DDP (duties paid) and is part of net-a-porter, which is now joined with Yoox, and Yoox has always been reasonably diligent about listening to vendor requests for price differentiation between different markets.

Essentially, the inefficiences in the market that customers have been getting an advantage from are being corrected.  I have a feeling we will see more and more of that.

Thanks. That makes sense. I didn't think they'd do that. a funny new form of protectionism perhaps. (the item I am looking to buy gets priced 47% more on the sale price when I proceed to purchase with shipping to the US, which is incidentally close to the markup for retail prices for this brand)

I'm looking, doesn't look any different than this morning!

Edit. OK I can see what they've added. Not much of interest and anything good at 80% has immediately sold.
