Just because it is done by a majority does not necessarily mean it is acceptable. It is more about principle than anything. Call me old fashioned, but I expect them to wait for a little more than 2 hours or at least contact me before cancelling my order, given that I had been prompt with my correspondence.  And about the $50, it does not do me any good and makes no financial sense whatsoever. It is store credit on the next order. It is very likely that I will have to spend more than USD 50  to make use of it. So not only do I not get what I ordered, but I also go back to them for more business..

people love to complain

If you go back and read my post, you will realize there is a little bit more to it than that.

Also, what's up with the snide remarks? I know this is the internet, but that is not very nice.

doubt you're not going to find any sympathy here. no store in their right mind is going to "hold" items for people during sales season and they acted more than reasonably, even offering you credit. if i got credit every time an order has been cancelled on me...

just about every major sale these days ends up with stuff selling out within seconds and constant cart-jacking, it's a war out there, man.

Why is somebody with Tobias Funke as a username so serious?

Sounds like you need Anustart....

I think to be fair the reason the order was cancelled is part of the issue.  Now if it's their policy then fair enough, but sites are always offering differing shipping address options and if it's the case here then why cancel the order?  Perhaps if it's a case of one address being in one country while the other in another country then I could see that as it's likely for both your and their protection.

That said I think what they gave you is pretty fair.  They could have just apologized and given you nothing.  I've recently had issuses with three orders.  One is a small shop overseas and they to my surprise have done a poor job of rectifying the situation overall with the most frustrating part being poor communication.  Another is larger shop, or at least when you factor in their online presence, and when they have their sale it's very much like Mr Porter's in that it's busy and things go fast.  Well they are notorious for having an issue here and there on this forum and it finally happened to me.  Some two months after not hearing a word from them and not receiving my order they offered me 20% off my next full price purchase and free shipping.  They replied immediately, credited my order and then apologized quite sincerely and simply owned up to having made a mistake.  Normally the 20% wouldn't thrill me, but they have some pieces that 20% off is quite rare and more importantly it wasn't remotely a hassle and they communicated back to me immediately.  Anyway, point is that you got something (essentially $50 that you'd likely use at some point if they just gave it to you otherwise) rather than nothing.

Just to give a little insight here, an order can be accepted int he system but still trigger a security warning when the cc authorization is placed.  The card processing software/gateway has settings that allow certain forms of mismatch to be still accepted and then the store can look at it and decide whether to ship the order or request additional information from the customer.

We've had to cancel suspicious orders in the past, when there was a discrepancy or a strange pattern, and when the customer did not respond to emails/questions about it.

I understand. But they held it for me for a day which lead me to believe that they would hold it until we got it sorted out. Instead of abruptly cancelling my order and putting the things that I had ordered back for sale. Even more so, when like you said, things sell within seconds.

Thanks for writing. I would've preferred if they'd held my order until I got back to them. It had only been 2 hours since they emailed. And it is not like the things would not sell. What they offered to me was fair but not what I wanted.

Yeah, I don't think I put a fine enough point on it, but cancelling an order is not only for the retailer's protection but also for the patron's.  It's like when somenoe asks to see the signature on your credit card.  It amazes me when people get upset by that and quite frankly it annoys me when I don't get asked for my card to see my signature.  I think the difference with what you're saying as compared to what he wrote is that you reach out before cancelling and they did not.  Again though, I don't know the particulars and while you get one-offs, for me Mr. Porter like NMWA has been great.

Thanks for chiming in. My issue is with the fact that they cancelled my order even when I was emailing and calling them to sort it out

I actually had something funny happen when I placed my last order with NMWA; initially the credit card was declined, but I was able to use the credit card elsewhere and haven't had any issues since (FWIW, I was able to complete the order using a different card). My best guess is that it had something to do with the address match-up between my account on the NMWA site and my card (maybe including the apt # in the first address line vs. having it on the second address line?), but a little odd nonetheless.
