Serendipity. You go into a thread looking for one thing, and because their are other items, you get something new as you browse. Inefficient, but fun. I understand, because this is part of what I like, both online and off. I rarely go shopping with any purpose other than to window shop. And if something inspires me, I buy it.

My question is usually not "should I buy?", but "what should I buy?"

Obviously you guys have the data but it sounds like a handful of people like the serendipity and everyone else would like it to be more like yoox/grailed--easily filter brands and sizes.

 

Admittedly, as grailed gets bigger it gets worse. Too many variations on the same brand name, for example, more and more detritus

It's mostly over in CM, and from both buyers and sellers/  You can check out the discussion from 2011, and then again last year, iirc.  One thing that we did see is that there was a big drop off of views when we tried that, for just a little bit, and also a dropoff in sellers, which is a real issue as well.  A one item, one listing, with filters for size and category,  was what we had originally planned, but when we tried to adopt that, there was huge pushback from both sellers and buyers over on the CM side.  On this side, most people wanted filters and a one item, one listing, system.  The result was a compromise that is hardly perfect.  

 

I do have a drafted solution that would enable both fun browsing and easy filtering.  This was a system that J has devised back in about 2011 (he is decidedly smarter than me in many ways.)  The problem is that when you partner with an external company, you don't have the same mobility that you do as just two guys.  I would pay someone to just build out the system and link it, but the problem is to get it to talk to proprietary software.  I actually talked to a developer about building the system from scratch, and even without the talking problem, it would be a lot of development hours.  As in, months and months.  So clearly it's not a project we'd want to undertake unless our tech and revenue partners were also really stoked about it.

 

In the interim, we could just have 2 different sets of rules.  One for CM, and one for SWD.  Essentially have 2 different systems, one operating the way it does now, the other operating under a different set of rules.  The problem with would be confusion, since the rules for posting would be different in CM and SWD classifieds.  But this is something that we could revisit immediately.  Anything that requires a bunch of development in B&S, it's unrealistic for me to say that I could make it happen in the foreseable future.

Agreed have been scammed on grailed and the buyer still gets a positive feedback and their is not real way to contact an admin to have a member permabanned because account creation is extremely easy.

Fok, you should incorporate a size filer in B&S like the one on selfedge.com now uses for jeans.

Yeah, but a handful of people liking it is not really a defense for the current system.  Stagnation is a dangerous game.  Grailed's growing detritus devalues Grailed's brand-sorting system, but this is not a unique problem for them, we suffer the same- or worse.

 

Clearly our feedback system and userbase are vastly superior right now, but the marketplace feels very old and inefficient.  Serendipity is what you find in the eShop Someone-Should-Kop thread, but accurate measurements and sorting mechanisms should be what we find in an online clothing marketplace.

We originally were slated to do this, but it makes no sense in the present system, since you can have multiple items of the same category in a single listing.  It would make sense if we were to adopt a full fledged, one listing, one item, system.  

 

On an open source software, you might be able to do this more quickly.  We are on a proprietary platform though, so we'd need buy in from our partners, and it's hard to get that when the larger part of the forum just doesn't want it.  Hard for me to convince people to invest in development when it's not even clear that, on the whole, that's what the community wants.  It's not as simple as me hiring a developer to make a hack.  The benefit of having a hosted solution, of course, is that we've managed to avoid any major hacks, we have well backed up systems, and we haven't had a true outtage in years (we used to have them regularly), and when someone plants malware on the forum, which has happened a few times, it gets detected and removed much faster.  Also, we haven't had to disable any features.  When we were on open source software, we used hacks regularly, and while some of them were useful, they didn't always play well together, and we did have to disable features or uninstall useful hacks just so that things would not grind to a halt.  But we did pay a price for our security by losing a bit of our mobility.  Also, we have a mobile site that I think is far superior to the tapatalk that we relied on before.

 

Incidentally, this is one of the places where the gap between CM and SWD becomes apparent.  We did try to implement this system, but the push back was so strong and so immediate that we decided to not push ahead with that part of the development.

I agree with all your points.  But the flip side is that you can't just plant an unfamiliar system on a community and expect it to take.  Every big perturbation on the system has a price.  If everyone were in agreement about B&S, we'd push really hard to change it.  But.... evevyone is not in agreement.  When we did try to change the system, the CM part of the community pushed back, very hard, and like it or not, they drive a lot of transactions, a lot of views, and therefore, have toi be considered.  A lot of the CM community really like the thread style classifieds and don't care nearly as much about efficiency as do people on this side of the forum, who are a completely different demographic.

Enforcement is kind of on an as-reported basis? Also, for every random Rick Owens item sold in SW&D, like 50 CM suits are sold. It wouldn't surprise me if the difference was that great in market traffic. I think a few powersellers have explained how much easier it is to move high dollar CM items (more uniform sizing/measurements and people tend to know exactly what they want and aren't struggle students/new grads). The serendipity thing makes sense too - not only from a generational, but also from a purchasing power standpoint.

I dunno if anyone posted the 10% forward code or the 20% La Garconne sale kicker... Forward code expires in at 4 PM PST "get10". I think La Garconne is gone... JULYID20.

They don't go nearly as deep as the other two, at least for decent stuff.
