Re Canadian shops:

Keep in mind that Canada Post in expensive. Sending a package to the US with tracking usually starts at about $25. International airmail can easily be $100 if you're sending something like a pair of shoes or a heavy jacket. Factor in packaging materials, time spent preparing the package, filling out customs forms and making the trip to the post office and the price doesn't seem so unreasonable after all.

Also, it's nice for us Canadians not to have to pay duties on reception of our purchases, even if the initial retail price is often higher.

I've had packages from Europe with shipping charges higher then the ones from Roden Gray, internationally it's all marked on slips (what they paid, insurance etc) and Roden have lied to me before (charged me above 100 and the slip came back at like 75)

Realtalk: it's just price gouging and it's a joke, defend it at your leisure lol

Some shipping costs are just ridiculous. But ultimately it's up the retailer--and if they're still in business, who's to say their cost structure isn't working.

Same w/ custom forms. The best was one retailer, who shall rename nameless, marked down their products 95% on the form....

Nomad shipping is pretty ridiculous. The only reason I bought from them last year is because they were the last retailer I could find offering what I was looking for and the sale prices were fantastic so even with the shipping it worked out for me cheaper than the other places I was looking at. That was also before they raised the shipping prices even more for 2011

Yes, Canada post is expensive, but lots of shops gouge on even domestic shipping with usually a 1.5x-2x markup, it's ridiculous. Also "not paying duties" is moot -- if you get things shipped int'l by regular mail (and not UPS/DHL/other dipshit courier) the worst you get is $5 + HST + duty (so like 25% tops). The thing is that Canada Post mostly doesn't care and if you do get hit the package is usually marked down anyway so no big deal. But Canadian retailers charge you HST on the full, high initial retail price, then gouge you on shipping. It's bs.

As far as the whole Canadian shipping debate, most of what's being said is true. Canada Post is REALLY expensive. I've lived in Europe and the US and the prices simply don't compare. We offer free shipping within N. America on orders over $200, and $10 flat for orders under. Our average order is over $200 so that means most of our customers in Canada AND the US are getting free shipping on their orders. It costs about $18 for us to ship even a t-shirt to the US, so we lose out on literally every online transaction. We also don't charge HST on any orders outside of BC, which as far as i know should be the policy for all shops. Basically if you are in the US and you are looking at an item on our webshop that costs over $200 and is manufactured in N. America you should not pay a single dollar over the listed price.

International shipping is a whole other story. We routinely pay between $60-$100 to ship to Australia, UK, Japan, etc. The most we charge for that is $45, so again we are losing out pretty much every time. For us the trade off of having access to customers far outside our local market is worth the lower margin, but obviously not all retailers feel this way.

I just want to make sure not all Canadian retailers get lumped together with this perception. Aside from ourselves i can think of quite a few other shops that offer reasonable shipping rates and make it easy for international customers to shop with them.

Support you guys business practise ... ordered something from you guys and got free shipping. In comparison if I ordered from Nomad that motherfuckers would charge me $50.

The worst thing about Nomad is that they charge based on the price of order which is totally ridicuolous. Buying a tshirt that they sell for 100 dollars and they will gouge you $30. Buying a tshirt that sells for $50 and they will gouge you $20. Does not compute.

Their customer service is top notch as well. Purchased an SNS sweater from them a few months back and Guy was very helpful with sizing info.
