I have read an article or two in GQ about a good t-shirt fit, and I've seen a few posts here (but feel free to chastise me if I missed one about this same subject), but I still don't know where I should get quality, affordable t-shirts. I know American Apparel are decent, though lately they seem a little long for my taste, and there's a plethora of premium t-shirts that cost more than I spend on shoes, but I can't justify dropping more than $20 on a shirt when I can get two Hanes premium t-shirts for under 10 bucks.
By the way I'm talking about graphic-free shirts.
Also, if you have a recommendation, could you also provide me a link to where I can find the shirt?
I'm looking for something that is moderately fitted, or athletic fit. If it helps, I am 6', ~160 lbs, I wear a 36 jacket and I have rather narrow shoulders.

A is still the gold standard in solid Ts as far as I know. You could try aggressively shrinking them to deal with the lenth. Or simply have them hemmed.

Hello Doppelganger: I've been wearing hemmed AA summer shirts, simply because they come past my crotch when untouched; I'm not a short guy. This particular topic gets discussed a lot, but the right combination of cheap and quality always comes up, and most people come out on the side of cheap and fit. It's hard to hit the exact fit for under $20 without just mutilating an AA shirt, but I remember having some great soy tees in that range, but can't remember the manufacturer now. If you can find them, DKNY white tees were the best I've ever owned. This is a terrible and empty quest, but I've been satisfied with AA summer shirts in black. edit: also, shrinking AA shirts in the dryer never worked for me, they always seem to shrink unevenly and fade.

I bought a few solid T's at Club Monaco two years ago for under $20 and they fit me well (mediums). I am 5-10 or 5-11 and the length fits very well. Additionally they have held up great through weekly wear.

if you get lucky, you can find armani exchange t-shirts for about $12...they're made of pima which is heavenly, and I've found mine have held up for about a year with no problemos. Also...when Barney's coop has a sale, their plain barneys brand t-shirts are always a good deal (normally about $12 as well, though I got one for $8 at an outlet)

as blank mentioned, the uniqlo tees get my vote as well

the plain coloured pantone series uniqlo tee shirts are actually quite nice for $15, good deep saturated colours and they even have a quasi yolk on them which is sort of unique and gives a snug fit in the shoulders

We have the exact same height/weight/shoulders and Michael J Krell Tshirts fit me perfectly. It's more than you want to spend though, just letting you know his stuff fits people who are mediums but sometimes needs a small like we do.

I'm telling you, AA tshirts shrink a shitload and at 6-6'1, after a wash and dryer the medium fits good in length and body.

Also, try Urban Outfitters BDG tshirts. The heathered tees(50cotton/50poly) are really soft and the mediums fit really well. Their cotton ones are more iffy on the sizes as in their vneck i take a small.

You should try Gap Athletic Fit tees in small as well. That's what i do and it works out really well for small/mediums(as gap stuff is bigger than tagged).

I personally don't like H&M tees. I didn't like the feel of the tshirts all that much, and just couldn't find a good fit on the tshirts. Mediums too big, smalls too small. I didn't buy any so i couldn't see if i could do what i do with AA tshirts to shrink them, but i like the AA tshirts better anyway.

I've mostly an H&M guy. They have a few lines of Ts, and I am about 6'1 6'2 and they fit me well. And at like, $5 a shirt the price really can't be beat. Come in every color and with v-neck, crew neck, whatever.

speaking of cheap tshirts...if you visit the barneys website, you can get some of their tshirts for $9...shipping's a b!#$h at $12, though, ugh.
