Spoke to an SM today about getting something made up in the near future.  I was told, "I'm sure it can be done for you."  Don't know if thats because I've bought a bunch of shoes from that store, but it sure seemed to me like that was implied.  I think there is mixed information/knowledge at the retail level.

I was also told it would DEFINITELY be possible to do a GMTO (I got the feeling, nothing too radical) if we could get a group of 12 (much like C&J).  I don't really see that happening unless there is a trunk show or something like it, with more shell options.  I wouldn't mind a pair of Natty Dundees.

@peppercorn78 Dust? Please!  You just wanted to showcase The Precious.

Even with minimal specs there's too much dissension to easily get 12; I'm constantly impressed how collegial the C&J MTO thread is, with so many willing to go majority rules on many aspects. For me, something like sole choice is usually non-negotiable - I either want leather or rubber for a particular shoe, and compromising makes it not the shoe I want. That said, lot of new offerings could make it more likely. Wish they'd chosen a different last for the Washington Park, though...

You shouldn't have to have a retail relationship with an SA in order to get SMU shell. I specifically asked about the SMU shell program when I went to the brand new bay area stores' openings (and they didn't know if I've ever purchased AE before or not). If your local SA isn't knowledgeable enough to do it, give Jay at the Walnut Creek store or Mario at the SF Sutter St. store a call and they'll take care of you. I've done SMU shell orders through both, and they've gone very smoothly (even when I had to have one re-made due to size).

I've called customer service and emailed as well. In both cases I was told they don't do it any longer. I don't like hearing no so I'll be reaching out to some stores directly as suggested. This is what I received from Allen Edmonds Customer Service:

Hello,

Thank you for your email.

Allen Edmonds no longer offers a custom program, where a customer can have a style manufactured in a leather other than what it is normally manufactured in.

If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.

Thank you,

Linda Rudd

I was clear that it is a different color cordovan and not a different leather but this seems to be their blanket statement when asked.

Maybe it's worth posting this on ask Andy. I think Paul is a more active participant there.

If this is the case then they just recently stopped all over again. Either way it is mind boggling. Scenario 1 is that SA and customer service is woefully unaware of what they are now offering. Scenario 2 is that they brought back a limited version of SMU and have eliminated it almost immediately after. They offer hardly any shell options and the only shoe you can get in all colors of shell is the Park Ave? All colors being the 3 limited colors that are offered. Is it possible they are on a path to becoming J&M?

I've never participated in a Meermin GMTO and I don't know how the ideas get on the list but this is a cool way to manage it: https://www.meermin.es/listaGruposMTO.php

This could be another chapter in the book I'm going to write "one of these days" to be titled "Why Won't You Take my Money?"

I agree.  Maybe they're worried about people not paying once the shoes are ordered.

The Patriot and the Dundee are also available in all three colors.

Ah, yes you are right I was thinking Oxford/Derby and forgot about those. Still... Not exactly a large lineup.

What's truly shocking is the number that are only available in ONE color: Strand, Dalton, Grayson, Norwich, Bradley. 5/12 shell options only available in one color, freaking >40%! Four more available in two colors. I mean, maybe they can only get so much brown. But why can't I get a Strand or Norwich in burgundy or a Dalton in black? I mean, those seem like no-brainers to me. It's also odd they only make the Bradley and Norwich in shell. Alden may be a freaking pain to deal with, but some retailer or other has most styles available in some form in burgundy and black.

Big ups to AE for having a simplified pricing model though. Trying to figure out Alden pricing is impossible. I swear the phase of the moon comes into it somehow.

Alden isn't blind to the fact that most people will pay whatever they want to charge for specific models.

I can't figure out how LWBs cost more than straight tip boots. Or why the commando sole adds like 50$

x post

I gave my natty Dundees some TLC today. I love how much they've darkened to a nice caramel color. You can see the original color near the top of the tongue.
