Reading back through this thread makes me sad.  Some amazing builds.

By the time I was ready for shell, all the walnut and truffle skins were freshly sold out. ffffuuuu.gif

I wish Allen Edmonds still did this.  I would love to see some of the imagination and creations that could still take place.

Really disappointed with AE for not doing basic individual MTOs. I called and they will only make shoes with a custom sole but they won't change the leather. I wanted a MacNeil in brown shell cordovan but they won't do it. They make all shell cordovan shoes to order anyway and they have brown shell in stock as they use it for Stands, Dundees, and PAs. This seems like a simple request that wouldn't cause any extra work. I'd even be willing to pay an up charge. I understand it doesn't make sense for them to do full customization jobs any longer but this I just don't get.

I would be interested to get some clarification from @AllenEdmondsCEO about if and when the SMU program would resume. It seems like it was restarted on a limited basis for a while, wasn't it? Some people have reported being able to SMU shell cordovan makeups for an upcharge. It just seems like there is no hard and fast policy in place, or no customer clarification.

It was reported in the AE Appreciation thread that there may be another special cordovan SMU event this fall at some point. It may be worth waiting until then, or trying with a different maker, like Crockett and Jones, Carmina (they have a very nice shell LWB) or Vass.

How odd; seemed like there was a basic $125 upcharge to do any model in shell for awhile. I agree, since it's all MTO anyway, no reason they shouldn't accept SMUs.

I had a pair of brown shell first ave boots made. Contact Heather in the Chicago store on Michigan Ave.

But I too had the run around before I started shopping from that store.

This was definitely the case. Someone had posted a pair of brown shell cornwallis on the AE thread a little while ago. Call some different stores because unless they have stopped this program again you should be able to. The lack of shell options and flexibility with SMUs has hurt the brand in my opinion. While I realize they produce most of their shoes faster than the more upscale manufacturers their shell products are produced at that scale so it is difficult to comprehend why it cannot be done. I'd also like to know why they only have 3 shell colors but perhaps thats a discussion for another day.

It would be (is?), indeed, an odd policy given they already make that shoe in black and burg shell, and all shell offerings are only made up as they are ordered anyway.  You wouldn't even be changing types of leather.  I think the SA might have given you some bum advice unless they have retrenched from their recent very limited MTO program.  As suggested above, call around for a second opinion.  I bet you can do it.

Having said that, regarding them doing it for an up charge, assuming you can find an SA who can make that happen, you know for $100 over the regular AE price you can get a Carmina LWB in Cognac shell and that price (currently) includes free shoe trees.  It's on the Detroit last.  If you wear the Macneil (7-97) in a D or E then that should be no problem with the Detroit last.  My Macneil 10.5E translates to a Detroit 9.5 (UK) pretty nicely.  Just another option to consider if you want a brown shell LWB.

Thank you for the suggestion Count.  (BTW - best movie of all time).  I just checked those out and I really like them.  They look like color 8 on their website, but when I looked at real photos from Google Images I was blown away.  The color seems like a cross between Ravello and Cigar.  These would go nicely in the rotation.

I have several pairs in color 8 and 1 in black shell cordovan and really want to add some brown to the lineup.  I bought some AE Townleys in brown shell, but unfortunately they are made on the 511 last and just don't fit my feet.  I would have liked to get an Alden LWB in Cigar, but nobody offers them right now.   I have a pair of C&J SWBs (Cardigan 4) in the mail so these Carmina LWBs would be perfect.  Thanks again!

Meh, the Carmina cognac is indeed a nice color but newer batches have been rather reddish. Sort of halfway to color 8. Here's my pair of cognac PTBs followed by "brown" shell AE derbies. Pretty big difference.

Here's brown, cognac, natural:

It's definitely more "cognac" and less "brown." Looks almost orangey in certain lighting conditions:

Damn just noticed my jeans are a little dusty in that pic. Apologies...

All the stores in the Bay Area will do the shell SMU. I ordered some within the past month.
