Irreversible: The Movie (spoilers)

Has anyone seen this movie? It has, quite possibly, the most violent and graphic death scene I have ever seen on film. Only thing is, I'm watching it out of context, because I haven't even seen the movie yet. Anyway, here it is.

The rape scene (with Monica Bellucci) is worse. That movie is really brutal. I have it and I've never gotten all the way through it. When are you supposed to be in a mood to watch something like that?

You need to see the whole movie - watching this scene out of context will not do it any justice. Very powerful film - remarkable direction, great acting (to the point of being disturbing given the real life Cassel-Belucci relationship). Gaspar Noe is just a very talented director - but I think Irreversible may be his only film that made it to the US (beside a short at Sundance last year)

I don't think you can be. But I totally understand why something like this has to be made. I've only seen that clip, but I dont think I've seen anything as ferociously honest.

Never IMO. That's why it needs to be seen in theater

I have not clicked on your link but I'm pretty sure I know what the clip is. In any case, it is a statement by the director that CGI cannot only be used for fantasy spaceships and lightsaber fights, but also to depict the most horrendous reality of physical violence - without any sort of Tarantinesque glamour associated with it

I think what is so striking about the scene is how intimate the setting is. War films depict violence in sprawling landscapes and show many victims, but every aspect of that one scene (In Irreversible) makes it automatically relatable. In that, this is the kind of brutality that not only happens daily, but happens in places that are commonly frequented (clubs and bars), unlike movies that showcase the brutality of war.

For those out there who are interested in how films are made: this film is a feat, both technically and from an acting point of view. Each scene is a single uninterrupted take. Some of the camera movements have been studied and planned for weeks to achieve the desired effect for that specific scene in one take. You need some serious acting skills to make this work - truly remarkable. This is also what makes the movie so intimate, as GoSurface noted

great movie.

Saw this in the theatre a couple times and have it on dvd, it's one of those movies that I have to see once a year.

Monica looks great, at least in the last half of the movie, prior to the 12 minute anal rape scene

By "prior to", you mean "after"

She was (is) a beauty

Jesus, what does it say about me that I got aroused at the thought of this and now want to see it

Joining your sicko club, reading about that scene was what initially prompted me to check it out in theatre. The Monica scene in question is shot SO realistically that it freaks you out that this is all acting. It's a 12 minute scene, shot uncut and straight thru.....I can't imagine how many times they had to stop to reshoot it, and how hard it would be for the actors to do it over and over again, with the kind of intensity and energy needed to pull it off.

Funny, that's the scene that made me decide not to see it....

Take a Dramamine,
the camera motion is intolerable!
