WAYWRN Composite -- 25 thumb minimum - Page 125

Yes.

As we all know, a thumb simply means someone on the internet likes the post.   Nothing more than that.

We’re going through an inflationary period for thumbs right now, but we’ve also gone through deflationary periods and no doubt will again.   Traffic varies with season, users come and go and the culture of WAYWRN changes as a result, and so forth.

I suppose one way to compensate to some extent would be to take it by calendar month (October, November, etc.) and take, say, the top ten percent by thumb-count.   But that’s much more work than anyone should be expected to do.

Cheers,

Ac

Going from 20 to 25 thumbs cuts out 20%-25% of the entries based on a very quick sampling I just did. Probably an acceptable culling but I personally wouldn't want to go to a minimum of 30 quite yet.

People obviously give thumbs for all sorts of reasons, the most helpful of which for this thread are based on the fit... but quality/setting of the photograph, popularity of the poster (including candids and meetups), good news given, adorable kids/spouses, and improvement of the poster over time all enter into it as well.

That said, and Clags has brought this up before, when you take all those reasons into account it's still the most (and only) impartial indicator we have. And although this thread is a nice way to collectively pat ourselves on the back, it's also the thread that I send non-styfo people to first when they are looking for ideas/inspiration as it's the TL;DR/digest version of WAYWRN.

So I actually don't think we should talk much here - I like the brief awards given and then jumping into another set.

I do think a "how this could have been elevated/improved" thread that runs in parallel to this one could be cool. Same "everyone owns it" structure and perhaps it includes those fits that get 20-25 thumbs... or 15-25 if we wanted a broader base. That would keep it from including the fits that fall really flat but still provide plenty of fodder for constructive criticism after a cooling off period where you might gain more objectivity about your own and others' fits.

TL;DR - i like 25 for now and think a "how to improve" thread for 20-25 or 15-25 could be cool.

@kulata

popularity contest? I agree to some degree. I like you but if you wear something that is not to my liking then I wont thumb up your post. Same goes for others that I like. And if it truly was a popularity contest then I should not be getting any thumb ups...especially given my recent rebellion(?).

25 seems like a good threshold.

A curved approach will be better then, 30 around winter/fall/spring when we have more decent fits and 20 in the summer. Exceptions will be made for our brothers south of the equator smile.gif

Too complicated.

I think we should stick with 20. The fits that exceed 20 thumbs are still pretty impressive.

My last post a week and a half ago got 45 likes...and my photo is nowhere to be found in here. I guess I'm not popular LoL frown.gif

We are somewhere in September if I recall correctly. In due time my friend.

If it is believed that raising the limit of thumbs from 20 to 25 will better select out those fits which are exemplary in some way, then it should be done. Much above 25, however, and the number of fits selected will be rather slim, I would think, and adjusting the number by season will be too much of a pain in the heinie for those who do the grunt work of posting the selections.

That being said, once the limit is raised, it will be interesting to see if there is a statistical change in the number of fits selected - whether or not there will be "thumb inflation" to account for the higher threshold, or not. Delving much further into the whys and wherefores as to what motivates thumbs up is rather overthinking a process that is rather capricious by nature (certainly, for myself, the awarding of thumbs up is not a process given to much analytical labor - if something appeals, it gets a thumbs up - if not, it doesn't).

There's a flip-side to all this, too.

I've noted over the past several months that quite a few more conservative outfits by well-respected long-time SFers which a year ago would have had no difficulty clearing the 20-thumb hurdle now didn't make the cut.

Cheers,

Indeed, Ac. The pendulum has swung back toward a dandier zeitgeist. Which, to be honest, is probably more entertaining...

Or we could just have a panel of anaymous judges who pick the best from each week. Throw out the # of thumbs if it is biased.

You miss Braddock there? May be me, apologies in advance if it is...

Don't think so. There was a Braddock fit with 23 thumbs, but the new cut off is 25. Several of his others there anyway
