I have found J Crew to be the softest, but I do not feel the perform any better than say Dockers.

I have a pair of J.Crew, Dockers, and GAP. My favorite pair is definitely the JCrew pair. They are more expensive than the Dockers though, so if you are planning on paying full price I would just get the Dockers. If you are willing to wait for a 25-30% discount from JCrew I think they would probably be the better option.

I have a couple H&M chinos I picked up for $7 each on clearance that are perfectly fine if you like slim fitting. Also can't go wrong with Lands End Canvas, Banana Republic, Gap, J crew. All depends on where on the spectrum of slim fitting you'd like to be. In terms of quality for the price, L.E.C. is the best I have experienced in the under-$40-on-sale category.

Check out Bonobos if you are willing to spend a little more.

Love the All Saints Pipe Chinos, perfect fit (slim) and so comfortable. They go on sale often too.
