I prefer Audi a.k.a. small tank to MB and BMW
With that outta the way, lemme say the following. Unless you have an image to maintain ( with whomever ) via owning a German motor, I'd seriously look @ a used Subaru Outback.
I drove Outback and Forester back-2-back, and it was simply day-n-night. The Outback damn near felt like a Jag; especially after the Forester's hay wagon of a suspension and " solidity "
They're assembled in IN, are fairly reliable and, I believe, run on regular. There's no turbocharger to take a shi'ite on you, plus you'd probably save 30-plus % in terms of ownership cost.
Buying a used high-end German vehicle potentially carries severe monetary risks. So unless you brother-n-law owns an independent shop, I won't touch those with a barge pole.
Matter of fact, few years ago Subaru even offered Outbacks with optional MOMO steering wheel/switchgear and a haul-ass Mcintosh sound system.
