Anyone own an Audi A4/A6???

Looking to buy a used one to use as a station car since my old Benz died. Specifically looking at a '00 A6 biturbo. Just wondering if there are any major known issues that I should be worried of. Was also considering an 00-02 VW Passat 4motion. In case it's not obvious, I'm looking for a used AWD sedan in th e$10,000 and under range, since when I get snow it gets pretty bad. Only drive it about 50-75 miles a week tops as we have a "weekend driver".

I do not own either of these, but did have a Passat years ago. They are decent and were highly rated around '00. I like the design and image but I would steer clear of teh Audi, the reason being I wouldn't want to own any turboed vehicle (esp European) that is going on 8 yrs old without a warranty. Although they are very vanilla and lesbian-like, an older subaru wagon could be a good awd car utility wise.

Thank you sir. The Passat is nice looking in that year range and it has the space I need for all my Little League / Big Box store junk. The A6 doesn't have to be turbo. Interestingly enough about the Subaru, I'm a lesbian!

Those biturbo's are known to have turbo failures at high mileage. I'd do some reasearch on audiworld.com, audizine.com, fourtitude.com for more info.

We had an A4 for about 120k miles. It was the AWD with the bigger engine from '00. It was a terrific car and we had basically no problems with it. Now we have an S4 Wagon that is also terrific. I highly recommend Audi.

I wouldn't worry about the 1.8 or the newer 1.9 turbo on an A4, but the 2.7t on the A6 can be particulary problematic as the entire engine needs to be pulled out to replace a turbo. Plus, there are very easy ways to make the smaller turbo a lot more peppy - do some research on the forums at audiwold.com or vwvortex.com for more than you'll ever want to know. I had a 2000 Passat with the small turbo and it was a great little engine, though I have to admit that my 1995 Mercedes E320 has held up better (interior wear, rattles, etc.) with 175K miles than my Passat did after only 3 years of ownership.

Do you like electrical problems?

Subaru does make cars other than lesbo wagons...

Never owned one but as luck would have it I just looked at buying a '99 A4 station wagon. I had it looked at by my mechanic who advised against buying it because it would have required fairly extensive repairs within the next year. He warned against buying one that has more than 75,000 miles and hasn't had its timing belt changed, in that when Audi timing belts go they do major engine damage requiring repairs nearing $2000.00. He also said the front upper and lower stabilizers will probably need replaced, upper and lower on each side ...$1400.00. Just in general it was his opinion that they are expensive cars to maintain. I'm passing, but if you want to come to Pittsburgh to pick it up I'll give you the owners number. He already did the timing belt and one of the wheel stabilizers.

I own a '01 Audi Allroad 2.7T (quattro, manual) and a '98 A4 2.8 (quattro, manual). Audis make good new cars and decent used cars if you purchase an extended warranty. Unless you are willing to do all the work yourself the labor is expensive and not very many independent shops are competent enough to work on German cars (there are a couple of good independent shops in Jersey). Audi parts are expensive, just like BMW or Mercedes parts. Early '00 2.7bi-turbo cars had an issue with an oil return line causing excessive turbocharger failure. The problem was corrected mid-year so if you are looking at '00 2.7T you should verify you have a post-correction car. Audi turbochargers are very expensive to replace. So is the automatic transmission. If you are looking for a higher mileage car without a warranty I would look at the 2.8 v6 engine/ manual transmission combination in an A4 sedan or avant (2000, 2001). 2.8 v6 was also available in the A6 but only with automatic transmission. If I had to get a used audi now I would look at 2004 A6 2.7T (manual) or a 2004 A4 3.2 (manual). Both of these may be slightly out of your price range though.

Thanks all. I have come to the realization that I will need to buy a newer Audi and have monthly payments, which I despise. So, the new target is an '04 A6 S-Line with the bi turbo engine. It has about 40,000 miles and since it's "certified", it's warrantied up to 100,000 miles and scheduled maintenance is included. Any NYC/NJ dealers that I should stay away from ?

We got my wife the 2000 Passat last year.
I did quite a bit of research on it.
Hers is the 2.8 V6 fully loaded, but not the 4motion.
So far, no problems. It has loads of power and
acceleration, lots of airbags, and all kinds of creature
comfort electronics. MPG with her driving is low
20s, upper 20s when I drive. Potential problems
I have read about: window regulators and suspension
bushings. We have the book, but I'm planning to do
just basic maintanence. It's a very very complicated car
to work on.

As for the 1.8T version - I read a lot on this, many people were
happy. Many people had some serious complaints about
early engine failure, which may or may not be cured by using
synthetic oil and frequent changes. Also, excessive, and I mean
really excessive, oil useage.

If you get one, most likely you will eventually get an emissions warning light.
The code will tell you that you need new catalytic converters.
You don't. The VW dealer has a software flash that corrects this, and
should do it for free.

I've had both the Audi A4 and the 00-02 passat. Both are excellent performing cars, I'd have to rate the Passat higher though because it required less maintenance. The A4 is awesome to take skiing though, it's got heated seats =)
