I am interested in acquiring some works by modern masters, particularly Joan Miro and Alexander Calder. Because I don't have a spare million lying around the house, I am looking at lithographs. Is a pencil signature worth paying a premium? What other considerations should I keep in mind?
skip this. there's nothing more boring than an art collection of this sort. wow. you paid 5,000-40,000 for a 1/1000 lithograph of an artist that produced a million of these editions over the course of 80 years. even my friends grandmother owns a "picasso." spend the same money on emerging artists at young galleries. besides, if you're thinking of it as an investment, the value of this sort of work by these artists has long since reached a plateau. take a risk on something new.
but if you take my advice, skip graffiti art and all that comic book looking crap too.
