A more positive take on Ghostbusters 2016.

Review sounds very defensive, akin to "come on guys its not that bad" making me think its gotta be pretty bad.
Yes, that's not a positive review at all. That's more akin to the reviewer trying to carve out a "safe space" for those who want the movie to be worth something.

Meh anybody who calls it out for being bad is gonna get called a sexist. It's a lose/lose situation.

Saw Ghostbusters. It was boring and not particularly funny.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
It's really pathetic that they couldn't think of an action climax that wasn't beat for beat a ripoff of Avengers 1, minus the good choreography or the scale or the imagination, etc.

He would have liked it if it had a male cast

I think a lot of you are missing the boat here. Not many people ever said the movie looked great. What many, including myself, always said was that the movie didn't look bad enough to warrant the huge amount of backlash it received. Yes, it's a remake of classic that a lot of people hold in high esteem and these types of remakes don't have a good batting average at all. So what is it about this Ghostbusters film that caused it to earn so much more scorn then the other countless remakes we have seen?

Take the recent reboot of Robocop. Myself and others had looked down on Robocop before release. It honestly didn't look good and didn't feel right. Unlike Ghostbusters, it wasn't coming from a creative team whose most recent film Spy is 94% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and made Bridesmaids that earned 90%. Yet Robocop wasn't wasn't the most actively hated upcoming blockbuster since before it even began filming. Although, had they made Robocop a woman, it might have gotten close. The extents to which people are reaching to protect that element are absurd.

Take a moment and look up the Youtube trailers for the remakes of movies like Robocop, Total Recall, Oldboy and Halloween. They all managed to earn more "thumbs up" then down and they were not all completely shit on in Youtube before release like Chostbusters was. The most disliked video in Youtube history? The YouTube comments from the Ghostbusters were full of negativity, vile and yes sexism.

Though, again, some people simply won't find Ghostbusters to their tastes, but those people alone don't account for the absurd levels of backlash Ghostbusters remake has accrued since the moment the words “all-female” surfaced, an entire year before one frame was shot.

Robocop, Total Recall, Oldboy, and Halloween don't approach the beloved status of Ghostbusters. Those are all violent rated R relatively niche movies. Ghostbusters is a comedy / family classic that's been seen and loved by millions more, always seeming to be on your favorite cable channel at the right time. They screwed with the wrong franchise plain and simple. Did they focus on comedy? No. Nothing in the trailer was remotely funny. So it looks like a hastily written re-make money grab. -1. Then they make the double mistake of putting gender-bending front and center. Which comes off as lazy and SJW. Like, we can forego good writing by making them women. You can call it sexism or you can call it political-correctness fatigue, but people, including women, are tired of it. Maybe the movie in a vacuum doesn't deserve the vitriol its received. But the movie represents so much of the current criticism of Hollywood and the political left that no wonder people are making an example of it.

Who in the fuck has any emotional investment in Robocop? Put a dude in a robot suit and blow shit up....who cares? Reboot it 35 times.

Ghostbusters looks like a really shitty SNL skit and probably goes way over its 2 minute entertainment expiration as well. They could have used Andy Samburg and Keenen Thompson, the drunk uncle dude, and whoever the hell else and it would still look like shit only nobody would get butthurt about if because Lena Dunham wouldn't care.

Objectively speaking, the OG ghostbusters wasn't even a great movie but it was a materclass in wit, delivery, and cast chemistry and I think that's why people are so protective of it. Any other cast and it would be a footnote and nobody would think twice about a remake.

Halloween is considered one of the most influential horror films of all time. You can hardly call it niche.

How about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Was Willy Wonka not a beloved film from our childhood? Karate Kid?

Yes, Ghostbusters 2016 looked like a bland money grab from day one. So do a ton of recent remakes. Yet Ghostbusters got vilified like so other. If you think Ghostbusters would have earned the same level of scorn if they had cast Andy Samburg and Keenen Thompson in it, then I have a bridge to sell you. Most people would have heard the news, frowned and went on with their lives knowing that the fact that the remake was being made doesn't take the original out of their DVD/Blu-Ray collections.

I think everyone will agree with you that the hate would be on a normal level in line with the other remakes had they only stuck to a shitty cash grab, a single variable. It's the gender swap second variable that has doubled the hate.

JRM appears to be defending a bad movie for how bad it is - only because it may not be as bad as originally thought. *mindblown

Um, Zach and Billy's races do not align with the original series. Things cannot be good. peepwall[1].giftinfoil.gif
