I only saw the first Harry Potter film and have read non of the books. Is this a prequel or something?

Looks to be "inspired by"

Apparently Fantastic Beasts is Harry Potters book and the film is based on that.

It was actually a textbook they used in school. JKR released it and a Quidditch book a couple years ago for charity. It wasn't really a narrative. The movie seems to be its own thing however.

So it's a movie based on the book read by the students in the fictional universe? How meta.

It's pretty much a cash grab for WB out of desperation, two of their biggest franchises has ended (HP and LotR) so they are hoping for big things on this one, they have a trilogy schedule for it already.

Especially with the flop of Pan, WBs really praying DC films makes them boatloads of money. I mean BvS is probably guaranteed a billi but the rest are still up in the air.

How long will it take WB to greenlight a Silmarillion adaptation? Or has Jackson worn out his welcome in Middle Earth?

No way has he worn out his welcome, Hobbits still pulled in ~$2.8b for that trilogy that not many seemed to have liked.

I believe the rights to that one belongs to Tolkiens family while LotR and Hobbits rights belonged and passed along between studios ever since the 70's animation adaptation.

I have to admit I didn't even bother seeing Hobbit3. And I only saw Hobbit2 under protest because the rest of the family thought it would be "fun"

I honestly didn't mind the Hobbit trilogy, not something I'll see over and over again but it was entertaining for what it was.

It was definitely long and stretched out with too much singing and unnecessary romance but it wasn't enough to hate the trilogy as a whole.

Let's put it this way: if any of the HOBBIT films are on TV, I'm changing the channel. If any of the LoTR films are on, I'm watching that motherfucker

I read a quick article about it today. Apparently it's set about 70 years before the Harry Potter story.

Agreed and it's really not even a competition.
