Neil Gaiman Wanted Benedict Cumberbatch For SANDMAN; Now Likes Tom Hiddleston For Role

"There was a time Johnny Depp would've been a great Morpheus, but now he's too old and it's fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict [Cumberbatch] was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, 'wow, that's incredibly Morpheus.' Tom Hiddleston is still out there, and the truth is, as far as I'm concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt in charge, his instincts are good and he loves the material. He wants it to be true to the material. [T]hey've written a script. I got a phone call about two, three weeks ago from Joe and David [S. Goyer] saying, 'Jack did a script, we read it, we want some things done to it. We want you to see it, but not this version. The next version will be in three weeks and then you'll be the first person to see it.' So I am now a week before seeing the script. It's going to come in just before Christmas. I'm nervous, I'm on tenterhooks. But do I have good feelings? Yeah I do."

The Hunger Games comparison is actually very apt because if you read my post, I specifically compared its first entry to MoS (not its sequels). Both of them were stepping stones to their respective franchises and both served as introductions to a newer, broader audience. Also, WB spent $150 million on marketing while Lions Gate spent a modest $45 million on marketing. Lastly, MoS also had the added bonus of getting IMAX 3D screenings (read: jacked up prices). So, If anything, Superman had plenty of advantages over it but still made less than the American Battle Royale. If you're an exec at DC/WB who, let's face it, only cares about the bottom line, you can't be too happy with those results.

Which is again, why I don't blame them for throwing everything AND the kitchen sink into BvS. They want a sure thing this time and if shoehorning Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and Aquaman into this sequel doesn't give it to them; they'll just have to settle for 2nd place.

My response to your statement that everybody wants the bad boy......it's interesting to me that Captain America 2 made $771,909,276. That's an easy $100 million more than MoS. You might say, "That's a sequel. You can't compare it to MoS. Superman just has haters, that's all." Well, how about they start making better movies for one thing? Maybe instead of buildings toppling over and dads stupidly being sucked into tornadoes, they actually put some effort into making him a character people won't hate?

No, the comparison doesn't work, again Hunger Games has a huge following and JLaw is a huge star to boot. MoS already had haters up in arms before the movie even started filming (look at the Snyder hate).

Hunger Games maybe be the launching point but people knows what is coming and they already loved that story so they'll pay to see it on the big screen. That helps a lot, again Harry Potter and Twilight comes to mind. You can't even argue that Twilight is a good film.

Cap2 is a different movie too though, it's a great film indeed that had spy elements but even Cap is a badass in that one. Marvel made him a badass, there is no hate towards him killing anyone while Superman got blasted for it. Cap2 is also coming off the strengths of Avengers, that is a huge boost, any film after Avengers does really. Again, no argument it is a far better film than MoS but it only made $100m more when it is a far better film overall in comparison to what most of you are saying is a very crappy film in MoS? Your argument would be better if Cap has a landslide lead over MoS.

And obviously they thought MoS was good, you really think these guys are "this is **** but let's invest millions and make it anyways"? I thought it was good and many thought so too. It made a good amount of money and still the highest Superman film to date.

And are people never going to get over Metropolis destruction? People who use it against the film seems like they didn't even bother to watch.

Again, people already hate the character and when he does something out of character, he is still hated. People hate because he didn't wear his glasses when he wasn't that Clark Kent yet. People hate because he wasn't the bumbling Clark Kent when he didn't need that characteristic where he was at int he film. People hated it that he didn't look like Reeves. I mean the complaints are ridiculous. I can see where someone may say it is a bad film because of the flashbacks and all that **** but all the other complaints, like changing plots where you say "he should have been this or should have been that" is just changing the film. People just focused on the stupidest things.

And you completely ignore MoS beating other origins films? And Supes not really being that popular anymore, not even close? Should I also point out that MoS made it's money back just on product sponsors and merchandising?

But this is really heading to the realm of no return so I am not going to drag this much further. Again no one is arguing or even contending that Marvel is leaps and bound better than DC, it's really not enough for the haters to just bathe in the success, they just have to kick DC down.

I mean just the "DC is hilarious that they ended filming and it doesn't come out til 2016 but it's ok that Marvel is filming in 2015 for a film that doesn't come out til 2018". **** is filled with stupid Marvel stan bias.

But yeah, moving on...

Honestly I'd put Snyder a few notches above Bret Ratner and Michael Bay... not saying much

FWIW, I enjoy plenty of DC's ventures outside of the big screen. Their animated films are top-notch, Arrow and Flash are super watchable, and Batman Arkham videogame series is amazing. I am TSwift onboard 100% for SUICIDE SQUAD too.

The funny thing in this thread is, when it was first created, I expected some discussion on actual comic books because I've been so behind on current story arcs that I have to rely on Wikipedia. Guess so many people don't read them as much

There is a separate comic book thread but I don't think it gets many posters.

I mean we can have those discussions here too but ever since Rambo left/got banned (?), the comic book threads just hasn't been the same and I even had to consolidate it to one thread.

He was a necessary evil.

One of my friends was telling me the other day how Marvel is being a little ***** by revamping a lot of their characters storylines (especially the ones they don't own the rights to on-screen) to **** with Fox and Sony. I haven't researched the validity of those claims but in this money hungry business, I am not at all surprised at all with their middle finger gesture

It is just with Fox, Sony still has a good relationship with Marvel and leaks from the Sony hack actually indicates Spidey has a good possibility of appearing in the MarvelU. More meetings are suppose to occur in January 2015 and then we will see from there.

As for Fox, I really hate that Marvel is so petty by cancelling the Fantastic Four books and stopping many XMen books and new mutant creations. They didn't include the F4 characters in most of Marvels 75th anniversary posters but they were kind of forced to include XMen because it is still their best selling books. Word is that they actually ripped out all the F4 pics in the Marvels main office. F4 while not selling well was still selling but they could afford to kick them out to pressure Fox to return some of their rights. Marvel offered to take F4 back in return Fox can keep Daredevil longer. Fox probably laughed in their faces because there was no saving that franchise within Fox.

If true, Marvel acting like a psycho ex right now.

And it's a shame. Comic book wise, I actually enjoyed F4 more than X titles as a kid. A lot more fun and breezy as opposed to the dark grim X storylines. Seriously though, that is SMH worthy

Why? The way Fox is handling F4 is bad for Marvel's line of business

Marvel is focused on creating quality, comic book faithful screen adapations. F4 is not doing that. Example: they're turning Doom into a "blogger"

It all comes down to brand dilution. That's what Fox is doing with their ****** F4 movie. Marvel doesn't want to be associated with that crap.

Yah I really don't know why Marvel is mad, I'd just be showering in cash all day long instead of worrying about everyone else.

They could put out Groot the Movie and have baby groot dance for an hour and a half and still make $500m in the worldwide box office.

I mean sure it would be nice (great even) to see all of them under Marvel but if all of them are there within one studio, I doubt we will get a Black Panther, Cap Marvel, Inhumans, etc.... films. I'm glad we see other takes on comic book films (to an extent of course) than Marvels formula.

How about you don't take every rumor that comes out as fact?

Movie doesn't even have a teaser or trailer yet.

Full disclosure, I am not defending Fox's upcoming F4 adaptation but maybe give it a chance at least? Marvel going the scorched earth route just seems downright spiteful to me. That's just my opinion on the matter. I really like F4 books which is why I think Marvel publishing and Fox should adopt the "stay in your own lane" mentality.
