The idea of weekly events filled with Korean girls of different ages looking for a guy to hook up with seems almost too good to be true (to me sitting back here in the States anyway). The thought of it makes me a bit light headed and delirious. Korean girls and Japanese girls are extraordinarily good looking.

Piobaire is absolutely right about American society needing to develop a more progressive attitude ... and about a LOT of things. I will resist the temptation to digress into a giant rant about ignorant, uneducated, slack-jawed, neck-shifting, pointy-headed, inbred, pious, prudish, close-minded Americans in general. Some of those exact bucket-heads are close friends of mine ... it still drives me crazy.
It seems this country has one foot on a banana peel and the other in some sort of wild-eyed quasi religious fundamentalism. The parallels between much of our nation and fundamentalist islam are *profoundly* disturbing to me.
So ... time for a pop quiz ... What country aggrandizes, allows and even endorses the most horrific sorts of abject violence in its culture, but absolutely flips out if a woman shows a breast ... no, it's not Afghanistan; no, it's not Saudi Arabia; no, it's not Yemen ... it’s ... (the envelope please, Brigitte) the United States of America!

Now mind you I am most certainly not a “liberal” ... in fact, in general I have a huge ugly problem with people using labels such as “liberal” or “conservative” et al ... not going there right now.
About half of my beliefs fall to what most people would say is the left of center and about half to the right ... some of them far to the right.
But the issue of the way we deal with sexuality (and even nudity) in this country is indicative of a much deeper, darker pathologic mindset ...

The Koreans, and certainly the Japanese ... and in fact most of Europe are far ahead of us in terms of acting like common sense adults when it comes to issues of sexuality.

I digress.

So happy I'm not American. I don't know how you guys live in your society as it's so dysfunctional. Next thing you know some sad social phenomena, like say a craze where lonely single people pay to watch other people eat food, will develop and show the cracks in your society.

You are right. It is tough. *Really* tough right now.

I am American. And proud. Born and bred here. But our country and our systems are currently dysfunctional.
Real patriots speak truth and seek to improve things. They also are open minded and consider issues on their merits.

At the risk of boring people to tears ... briefly ...

The mechanism we have relied upon to adapt and progress in society is broken. And only recently broken.

We have always relied upon the flexibility and integrity of our political system to move our society forward ... both politically and socially .. that system is completely broken ... largely due to the supreme court’s Citizens United decision ... but also other things ... notably the gerrymandering and redistricting performed by many State governors and their legislatures. Another issue has been a confluence of uncertainty of how to react to the Internet (we used to rely upon the editorial departments of news organization to filter out the really brazen bullshit ... people react to the Internet as if they are still in the same mode); Ronald Reagan’s destruction of the Truth in Broadcasting Act didn’t help ...... And the takeover of broadcast media by billionaires who have a political and ideologic agenda. It started with the buying out of AM radio bandwidth ... and has spread like cancer to other media outlets ... I watched with horror in the 1980’s as certain “conservative” multi-billionaires bought out AM radio, pretty much un-noticed and under-the-radar for most people.
Other issues as well ...

Bottom line, I don’t see us fixing that mechanism of political and social improvement any time soon.

As far as the social phenomena of paying to watch people eat food ... I think that people pushing the boundries is an important way that we find the intelligent center ... and in the process often some unexpected gems are created in the process. The important thing is that the phenomena, fad etc are modified, assimilated or discarded depending on their merits.
I don’t have a problem with things that seem outrageous or silly like paying to watch pretty korean girls eat.

And as far as such a behavior theoretically showing cracks in a (our) society ... like I say, I think it quite the opposite.

So glad you have told us you're not liberal as one might make that mistake since apparently all that is wrong with America can be blamed on Republicans and Ronald Reagan. Citizens United, eh? rolleyes.gif

Yes, I can see how having a society where a material number of people are so fucking lonely, so unable to make basic human connections, that they feel the need to fill this void with video of watching people eat can be modified and assimilated into a "gem." This certainly is a path to the "intelligent center," which I'm sure for you is well left of center yet filled with nativism.

I will not reply more as this is not a thread to continue rants against what you dislike in US culture and politics.

I see your point ... but I just don’t think it's necessarily because of lonely people.

Nativism ... nope ... actually I am pro-immigration to this country ... Not to be misunderstood; fwiw - all my grandparents are “right off the boat” ... not nativist - again, it's not that simple ...

More accurately: “what I’d like to see fixed”

Very well. Maybe a bit too much spleen on my part ... my post was rather off topic. Mea culpa.
Thanks for the reply anyway.

this country is built for only the most superficial kinds of intimacy. I doubt any country has a more developed one night stand infrastructure than South Korea
