Supposedly. It's comparable, although UK E, IMO is slightly wider than a US D., but perhaps not by much. But I would *not* go for a UK D, because that would be narrower than a US D.

My foot over 5-6 pair of RLPL in 8.5/9D and 3 pair of EG in 8.5/9E is that RLPLs are EG 8.5/9D. I can wear them after some painful breaking in and stretching but the E width fits my US D width foot much much better.

However others think the D width is like a US D width. Not true for my foot.

I always find this sizing inconsistency so frustrating.

I have the Inverness 82 last, purchased at Mitchell's in Connecticut. It is marked 9.5/10 D. I was told that EG marks shoes ordered by an American vendor with American sizing....hence D is normal width. Were the shoe being sold in UK it would be marked with an E.

Sound right? Last year I ordered the Sandringham 202 last in an F because I wanted to be able to wear heavier socks; probably didn't need to as it seems the 202 is a bit roomier.

In my recent MTO with G&G, they marked the width as a D. I assume that is their normal width.

I get so paranoid about messing up the size!

When EG sends their stock list they have three groupings D, E, F. Doesn't that correspond to narrow, normal, wide?

Exactly right. The 202 is a very comfy roomy last. Most of my EGs are on the 202. I love this last.

This is puzzling. If EG makes the Grant on the 888 last, don't they have three last widths commonly used (in UK D, E, F). They make the shoe on one of those widths. Would they customize the width on an entire production line?

The question is how do they label it. If it is on the normal (E) width, they send it to RLPL with a D marking. Wouldn't an EG Oundle 888 last E width be the exact same shoe?

When I spoke to EG, they said they didn't make a RTW less than a D; that would be made to order.

That is how I have concluded UK D is narrow, E is normal, F is wide. Now of course, EG tends to fit snug, so many used to say aan Alden or AE D width will find a RLPL D or an EG E a closer fit than what they are used to.

Shoes made on the EG lasts that are made to be sold in US stores are marked with the US standard. Therefore D is E is normal. MY THEORY: NEEDING VALIDATION!

Bengal-Stripe or Aportnoy, can you weigh in on this?

Quite a few RLPL shoes, sold in the States, are made on last 89. Lauren/Europe and Lauren/International are apparently different companies who place their orders separately. I've never seen a European RLPL shoe made on last 89. That doesn't mean 89 has never had been used at all in Europe, but last 808 is still popular with RL/Europe.

Last 89 is pretty big, compared to other EG lasts. So comparing 89 to something like 82 is a bit like the proverbial apples and oranges. The EG sale will open in about an hours time; I'll be there early, as I'm due to meet someone there. I try to get the information from the horse's mouth, and will post here later today.

I'm guessing all the confusion is from last differences. RLPL shoes have always been marked with UK widths, not US widths. To my knowledge so have all the other US market shoes, with the exception of some of the old private label stuff that doesn't bear the EG name.

Some problems did occur when RLPL ordered the wrong widths, for the last. For instance, they used to stock shoes on the 808 (narrow last) in a UK D width and sell them as a US medium width. Those ran narrow of course. Then they were stocking shoes on the 89 (a wide last) in E width. Those ran wide. On the 808, a UK E is a medium, and on the 89, a D is a medium. Those Barksdale loafers were another mistake, they stocked those in a UK D width and they ran quite narrow.

I have concluded UK D is narrow, E is normal, F is wide.
Generally speaking, that is correct.

I ordered a pair of black Cadogan on the 202 last (so I removed those from the list

). What was most vexing however, was to find a pair on the list which I had ordered earlier this year and which I'm still awaiting

I once clarified this with Hilary and she said their US D for RLPL is the equivalent of their UK D. We were discussing Mackays at the time.

The conversation arose when I said that I had acquired a pair of Malverns in the 202 last one full size smaller than my US RLPL size in an 888 D-width. However, the Malverns were in the F width.

I said that I had assumed their RLPL D was their UK E width, so I figured the F width would be perfect for me if I sized down one full size from my US size.

Hilary was aghast and e-mailed that D equals D, and immediately took down the last numbers so she could send me a pair of full-length socks to compensate. The too-wide Malverns are, incidentally, one of my most comfortable pairs now.

I think other staff members, however, will say that their RLPL D equals their UK E, especially if you have a high instep. I'm afraid I haven't tested Hilary's theory beyond the above Malverns.
