Workout talk is fun, but I suppose we could define this thread as strictly clothing related and take the rest to the general fitness thread?

The analysis on the combined effects of muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness with all cause mortality showed that the age adjusted death rate in men with high levels of both muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness was 60% lower (P<0.001) than the death rate in the group of unfit men with the lowest levels of muscular strength. These results highlight the importance of having at least moderate levels of both muscular strength and cardiorespiratory fitness to reduce risk of death from all causes and cancer in this population of men.  Results from intervention studies indicate that resistance training enhances muscular strength and endurance, muscle mass, functional capacity, daily physical activity, risk profile for cardiovascular disease, and quality of life. The benefits of resistance training are evident in men and women, young adults, and older people, in overweight and obese adults as well as in people of normal weight, and in people with or without disability, or with cardiovascular disease.We observed an inverse association between muscular strength and risk of death from all causes and cancer in older men (≥60 years) and younger men (<60 years). This suggests that older men may also benefit from having higher levels of muscular strength. In older men, functional performance becomes more directly dependent on strength, as these men also experience age associated declines in muscle mass and consequently in muscular strength.

Haha, sorry to disappoint you! You don't need to be swole to get girls. It's probably the least cost effective method, seeing how much work it takes to actually get some decent size.

I think the key word is "moderate". Also, note that I said "lean" and not "skinny".

This is kind of the point that I'm heading towards, although without seeing the paper I can't say exactly what they did. But health research in general is EXTREMELY hard to do, because it is very difficult to do randomized experiments (e.g. force one randomly selected group to lift weights for an hour a day but change nothing else, prevent another group from doing same, or force them to run an hour a day, etc.), and observational data will always have a million omitted variable bias problems. Add in that it can be hard to measure health outcomes, you don't know the time frame you need, and the fact that the number of ways the variables can combine to affect health outcomes is very large, the task of figuring out what the hell is going on seems almost impossible. So I think it's important to take really almost any result from health and nutrition lit with a large helping of salt (the health effects of which remain unclear).

No, I haven't looked into that one. This was just one of the first links that showed up in google scholar. I didn't really look at the validity of the design and all that, but it seems that this is one of the few papers that doesn't just use grip strength as a measure of muscular strength.
