Good Natured Advice Thread (improving a business wardrobe) - Page 2377

I believe there is a "rule" of sorts, or perhaps a guideline is a better term; which states that SCs should be slightly shorter than suit jackets.

Such as it is, this is based on the idea that a SC should contrast with trousers, creating a visual dividing line which ideally would be roughly halfway between the top of one's jacket collar and the hem of one's trousers.

Since there is by definition no such dividing line at the hem of a suit jacket, it can afford to be a little longer - both to make one's torso appear thinner, and to ensure complete coverage of one's bum.

Question, thoughts on lapel pins? Ive seen some knots and ive seen some floral pieces. Whats the general advice on if one was to wear one.

Sport coat length - I have some unstructured stuff that is shorter than I would be willing to wear as a suit. There is somewhat of a line one could plot for the distribution of my coat length vs relative formality.

Lapel pins - not a fan.

Damn that visual dividing line is an issue if I wear high waisted trousers than.

I don't mind them if they're subtle and if they cohere with the rest of the fit.  Gratuitous lapel pin in a country tweed? Ridiculous.  Small flower or knot in a brighter spring/summer jacket?  Sure.

Keep in mind that it's never a "missing" item that your wardrobe "needs," so if you're having to rationalize or justify its inclusion in a fit, it's probably a bridge too far.

It's more of an issue if the pants have a lower rise.

I think they're a cool, albeit totally unnecessary, accessory. Monsieur Fox and Vanda have a few neat and simple ones.

I have several pins that were given to me after I made political donations. I like to wear them on my lapel when I feel like dissuading people from trying to talk to me at restaurants.

I think they are sort of dandy and totally agree with @heldentenor about using them in a spring summer jacket. Tweed or cbd suit probably not. Although I think if I was going to a summer wedding and wearing a light grey or blue suit I might consider throwing in a white one if its a day time affair.

Also, sorry if this is too many questions.

Who are your favourite loafer makers?

Pretty much my favourite shoe, looking to expand my collection.

Not sure if it's frowned upon to post links to Insta, but this dude wears a lapel pin (or sometimes chain) as tastefully as anyone else.

Also, Benedikt from Shibumi (I can't recall his StyFo handle) often wears one well.

I only wear certain ones.

I actually think a pin like the one shown above looks really nice with a CBD outfit. Provides a bit of pop without being in your face.

That said, it would stand out in some circles that mandated CBD...but for most such examples are few and far between nowadays.

A random thought occurred to me over the weekend and thought I'd inquire here:

Are there cotton shirting weaves that are considered spring/summery? I know there are oxfords for fall/winter, and linen for summer, but what curious as to whether any cottons were considered airy enough to be "true" summer type weaves?
