If you absolutely can't go over 4 bills, AE is the way to go for a big clunky longwing. If you can find a good pair of seconds on sale, then you're even more golden.

If you can stretch the extra bread, then the Carmina is worth every penny even at 450. Just as long as you have your sizing down.

I would also consider Alden calfskin or grain LWB if you have more generous feet, though it's more expensive, and maybe not quite as nice as Carmina.

Try Loake or Barker: a lot of last and style variety, consistent and widely available.  For $400 you can also hit Cheaney, and maybe even a sneaky Alfred Sargeant in the sale.

For a wide range, visit herringshoes.co.uk or pediwear.co.uk  They are both very helpful on sizing and shipping too.

Can I get some recommendations on "business-wardrobe-appropriate" ties to coordinate with the following shirt fabric? My employer requires some green to be worn every Friday, so I picked up a dress shirt in this fabric from Luxire, but I am having a hard time pairing it. I normally wear it with a mid-grey or navy blue suit. I'm sure it goes without saying that I'd prefer the tie be something versatile as opposed to one I'd wear only with this shirt.

Loake dark brown suede chukkas from pediwear. $250 US delivered. Danite sole. Perfect. Last is right mix of sleek but not too sleek (as in a 348 was just too sleek for a boot to me). Looks great with jeans or grey trousers.

What's your budget?  Carmina or Enzo Bonafe polo or dark brown suede would be my top choice but after the Carmina price hike for US buyers, they aren't cheap.

If you want to spend a little bit less, in addition to the recommended Loakes above, Allen Edmonds finally figured out that a suede chukka was a good idea, and their Dundee 2.0 (available in suede and grain leathers) is on sale for $279 until Tuesday.  I might take a punt on those.

www.herringshoes.co.uk have some Loakes on sale.  Some of their own brand stuff is also made by Loake.  You can search sale items by size.

@OdusBK , further to what I said above, I notice that Pediwear have a couple from Barker that are very much in your zone - assuming you want something to wear with a jacket and tie, and calf rather than polished leather.  Still under budget.  But if you want more of a shit-kicker, look up the Grenson "Sid" as well: it's from their G2 line (made in India), but a solid welted shoe, and you can find myriad colours and offers if you search around.  Pediwear had at least one, but also Eastdane often has them, possibly Yoox, but either way someone always has some on sale in one configuration or another.

@GuP the Loake Kempton through Herringshoes is about $274 shipped. As noted, the AE is on sale for $279. The former is a little darker and has a flat welt with Dainite. The latter has a split welt and a buytle sole (though interestingly, their smooth and grain Dundees are on Dianite).

If my math and memory are right, Carmina jacked their U.S. prices on their suede chukkas an even higher rate than their mainline calf models. But, one hears good things about them.

This reminds me: how far up the formality scale can one go with a flat welt, dark brown suede chukka? OJT?

Will check those out. How does that Loake size when compared to Carmina Rain or CJ?

Re AE Dundee - not a fan. Have seen them in persona and they are a bit...chunky?

Any recs for fall sweaters to be worn in the Northeast? Mostly will wear casual

For a suede chukka take a look at Kent Wang. I'm stuck on a pair of broge suede AE Malvern until I can budget for another shoe but the KW are probably what I'll upgrade these to in a year or so.

I wear the same size in carmina Rain, Inca and CJ Edgewear (348) last.  Same size as the Loakes.  For 4250 delivered, with shipping, tax etc at the price point you are looking for, its a no-brainer.  I should add, i really wanted Danite soles, so maybe there are other option without Danite.  http://www.pediwear.co.uk/loake/products/5631.php
