I envy both of your collections.

I settled on 20 items before implementing a 1 in 1 out plus 1 policy. My thought process was pretty much that I like to have a bit of variety in my suits and sport coats for each season, but I don't need to wear classic menswear each day and don't really want to own something I'd wear less than 5 times per year (dinner jacket as the exception). My favorite things get worn about 15 times a year. My least favorite things probably 5-6 times a year.

What do you count as a single item? Is a pair of dress socks considered 1 CM item of clothing? A shirt? Or just jackets and suits?

For a while I worked off a plan to fill basic needs without much duplication, but with allowances for personal preference (i.e, most people wouldn't have three green sportcoats in their first sixteen).  Once I had five odd jackets for each season and four suits total (navy SB, grey SB, grey windowpane SB, blue pinstripe), I started to gravitate towards feel and moved toward a "1 in, 1 out" policy.  Things I didn't reach for got moved (or I attempted to move them/give them away), and I started to look for things I often thought I wanted but didn't yet possess.  Total is now at sixteen jackets and five suits.

At the moment, I have only one hole that I'm actively looking to fill, and with @sprout2 helping me out, I should be able to accomplish that this fall.  From then on, it's strictly a question of upgrading certain things and snapping up the odd target of opportunity.

If I could do it all over again, I'd slavishly buy exactly what Murlsquirl bought as he bought it.  No more and no less.

My current wardrobe is:

1 dinner jacket
7 suits
12 odd jackets

Actually haven't purchased any suits or odd jackets this year.

Odd jackets and suits (including tuxes).

I'm also curious if I'm in the majority or the minority for having more dress trousers than odd jackets (~20 trousers vs. 16 jackets).  I think it's because I find that 9-10 oz. wool jackets are wearable for about 10 months out of the year if one adds an overcoat when it's cold, but that there's no such thing as a true "three season" trouser.

How often do yo rotate between sport coats? I own 3 but constantly find myself reaching for one coat in particular.

First thing, when the time comes, seek the scalpel-free vasectomy. No pain meds required.

Second, I waited until I was tenured before embarking on children, and I think that made the process considerably easier. It depends on the institution, of course, but quite serious dedication, to the point of obsession, is often required.

However, fatherhood is a young man's game. So, a delicate balance must be struck.

I probably wear a suit once a week and sport coat twice a week on average. I try to avoid reaching for the same sport coat all the time, though during F/W I find myself very tempted to just grab the blue Donegal tweed every time. I do have to force myself to wear something else. 8 of my 12 sport coats are F/W ones and I probably reach for 3 of those 8 around 60% of the time. Summer is more of an even rotation, though the linen RAF blazer probably gets the most play.

What is this no scapel vasectomy that you speak of and why wasn't I offered it?!? Son of a €@&$@!

30 + x odd jackets here. Very seasonal collection with too many blues, still thinking of buying more.

Pants are probably less than 20.

I don't wear suits often.

I have about 15 pairs of trousers, 6-7 sport coats and 3 suits. I wear a sport coat about 3-4 times a week and a suit 3-4 times a year. I try to wear pants everyday though. People seem to expect it.

I also have more trousers than odd jackets. Probably about as many trousers as odd jackets plus suits. I think about 20 pairs of odd trousers lets one keep a good rotation with appropriate seasonality if one isn't wearing a suit too often. For me, this may be because I only wear a jacket (suit or sport coat) about 50% of the time.

How do you go about purchasing your sport coats? Do you see how many combos (pants and ties) you can make before purchasing or go by impulse?

I feel like @Claghorn might wish to refute the validity of that concept.
