I think that you may have misunderstood me.  I went to Victoria and Vancouver for work.  Our guys in Pitti had fun, but it's still work.  Our editor-in-chief went to Japan, and it seems like he had fun, but it's still work.  I would not have greenlighted any of these costly projects just so that people can have fun, though we certainly hope that people had fun.  It's easier to get people to do fulfilling, enjoyable work.  I greenlighted them because they allow us to create great content - both qualitative and quantitative metrics indicate that our members and more casual readers appreciate our efforts - and to stay relevant today and tomorrow.

Can I ask a clothing question?

You completely missed what he said.

FWIW I like the product that this site provides. Sometimes I even end up buying something because of the ads. They aren't pop ups, they aren't "flashing" ads, and they are generally on the topic of menswear (in other words, no "Kevin Bacon used this weird trick to lose 75 pounds!!!" type ads). I can more than live with what is going on. Not taking away from other people's points of view, just offering mine.

Fok, you've mentioned not liking this kind of stuff, right?

I realize this is technically better suited for the thread in GC, but we're all good natured fellows here, and this thread is no stranger to off topic conversations spanning a few pages.

I don't like the technical execution.  I'm not really against this style of advertising in concept.  What I don't like is any type of advertising that interferes with the forum itself.  In that light, the thing that I don't like about takeovers is that they mess around with margins.  \

Re, what an individual member/user actually sees depends on how you have your monitor configured, the size of your monitor, etc...  I use a little, not very good, 21" monitor at home, so I only see slivers of the takeover on each side, and the stuff at the top.

Same.

Via deals I've found on SF my last/first/only 2 pairs of Vass were $720 Canadian vs. $1,000 and my first pair of Edward Greens were $1,000 vs. $1,400 (Canada is expensive but we all have jobs and the women are better looking than you'd expect). That's $960 on 3 pairs of shoes and if there were a plain toed derby on the AE seconds ad I'd probably get that at a savings also (cause how often do you really where a black Derby, I was gonna ask?). Anyway, for almost $1K in savings as I start to build my rotation I'm glad that my clicks might have contributed to someone going to Pitti, or Vancouver especially as that's an awesome city that I also have been to for work.

That still doesn't mean "good".

So, and again, being perfectly transparent, we have AE as a big client because the ads work, and there are a ton of Allen Edmond fans on the site.  For banner ads, we sell them directly, or use the top ranked ad networks.  The "remnant" we fill with adsense, which does NOT have the highest payout, but is known in the industry to have the best filters (even they get spoofed sometimes, but they want to only take high quality ads).  I'm answering questions and addressing issues here because you guys represent an important fraction of our core members, and I want you to have as much of an understanding of how this stuff works as possible.   I will say one last thing, which is that online ads, even good ones, pay a fraction of what print ads use to pay.  So even a large site like ours can only afford a small staff.

Clearly, you've never been to Montreal.

I didn't mind the ads until they got to the point that pages wouldn't load because of them. I broke down and installed Adblocker, and StyFo performance was transformed. I would feel bad about it except that I've never clicked on an ad. On the other hand, I have purchased from vendors who advertise based on actual forum content.

True, only Toronto and some places thereabouts. This may be in poor taste, but years ago I even had a "fling" with someone from Toronto. Not one of my better decisions.

This happened?  Hmmm... alright, if stuff like this happens, please just contact me directly.  The way the scripts work, this should be an impossibility, since the content loads, and then the ads, and the ads will default to none if either the server or user side is too slow.  Of course, there are essentially no impossibilities in this world.

To be clear, the above is not a complaint, just a report of personal experience.
