So I own 0 pairs of black shoes. I havent had any reason to but feel like I should have 1 pair but everytime I look at a pair it makes me almost sick to my stomach to buy a pair of black. Ive got every shade of brown under the sun which works in every occassion for me except for black tie which i have never had to go (thankfully).

Do I need a pair of black shoes?

I think funerals call for black shoes, but that and formal evening events are the only hard-and-fast places where black shoes are necessary for me.  I have one pair of captoes that I've worn twice in two years and a pair of black chelsea boots that I use as beaters when it's nasty outside.

Navy suit. Burgundy grenadine fina tie. White shirt. Black cap toe shoes. Unbeatable.

Don I hate navy suits with black shoes. Plus in that situation I would wear a pair of burgundy calf shoes.

Helden thats my fear. Id rather spend the money on another pair of brown shoes

Why does a shoe colour make you sick to your stomach? Hell, navy shoes look like black indoors anyways, so it's virtually the same. So, if you've got a dark navy you don't really need black shoes. Some looks will always look best with black shoes though, but I can imagine you're not interested in wearing those anyways.

Parts of it are. Parts of it want to be. Apgu/Sinsa/Cheongdam is where it's at.

Idk to be honest. Every time I look at them they just look lifeless and dead. They don't develop any patina or character. That's what I love about any other color shoe.

I do own a few pairs of navy so I guess I can live without black

I mean they are nice but chocolate brown would have been perfect haha.

The GG Sinatra is a beautiful shoe even in black but still cant justify spending north of $800 for a black shoe

JK - I was in a similar situation in that, while I owned a couple of pairs of black shoes (DMs, semi-brogue oxfords and Tetbury beaters to be precise) I could never bring myself around to the plain captoe that is universally regarded as a staple.  This was semi-problematic in that I work in a fairly conservative industry (management consulting), but not so conservative that anyone would give me shit for black semi-brogues or dark enough brown other shoes.  I'm really not sure there are all that many places like this anyways.

Ultimately I found that the only black captoes that really appealed to me were G&G Oxfords (MH71) and AC Bodies.  I snagged the former during Nick's summer sale last year and have been really happy I did so, although I sometimes wish I had gotten the Cambridge instead.  They rank up there with my Portman 3's as my least-worn pair of shoes but it's great to have a pair that I like when truly needed.  I suppose it might seem counter-intuitive to drop coin on a little worn item but, for me I didn't want to spend money on something I didn't really like and still end up looking for the GG/AC anyways.  Now the box is checked in a way I'm happy with and, as they say around here, is khallas.
