It's totally fine. Probably a better choice than blue for an event. Blue shirt with navy suit is bit too business IMO.

I don't recall saying that, it's lighter than purple, darker than pink.

For the sake of comparisons then, I have two options with the Navy suit:

-A white dress shirt

Tie color (?)

Square color (?)

Suspenders color (?)

-Lilac shirt

Dark Purple or Navy Grenadine

White square

Suspenders color (?)

Let's figure out a tie/square/suspenders combination for the white dress shirt, then I think we can compare what's going to look the best out of the two.

If you want to complement--subtly--a champagne dress, I would suggest a purple, plum, or--a bit more adventurous--burgundy tie, all of which sound like they are amenable to you.

Let me clarify that there's no "recipe" here: you get to make choices.  Dressing for a job interview is about doing it right; dressing for prom should be about what you like done to the best standard you can attain.

This is a tough choice honestly, having already bought the lilac shirt makes me just want to go with that (it's still in the mail), but part of me wants to go safe and do a white shirt, especially after all the (mixed) comments, but that would require me buying one when I already have a shirt lol.

I think the lilac with a dark purple grenadine would look nice. I can't see what I would do differently if I had a white shirt, I think I would still go with a grenadine either burgundy or purple with a white square.

Also, what are the rules for braces. Match color of tie? Or can you play around with colors?

If you're doing navy suit and white shirt, here are a few ideas (from our store because I'm too lazy to search elsewhere) to play the chic but not too formal look :

Those look very nice, I could see them working very well with the white shirt.

I'm not sure which to choose now!

love second from the top, but just bought a version of the bottom one in brown.  For your purposes, #2 is awesome.

Ok. I'm going with white. That'll open up my tie options to whatever I like I think, even though I still lean towards a grenadine, or a polka dot.

I want to wear a pair of suspenders too, does the color of the braces need to match the tie? Or the suit? For classic look should I go with a navy set?

Wow, how many pages about that purple puppy tooth shirt already? @bmwahba39 I have a very similar shirt like yours (I'm a sucker for puppy tooth shirts). An impulse buy, because I liked the hand and the slight sheen of the fabric so much. But... I hardly ever wear it because it's so difficult to pair it with a tie. I've found the only thing that works is a black knit (or grenadine, if you wish). Works with a navy suit as well  (though grey would be a bit better probably) and preferably your shoes would be black, not walnut. But don't let those details hold you back, I'm sure you'll be dressed better than most of your peers at the prom. And of course, there's many more ways to 'complement' your lady as well. Go out and have fun!

It's all good, I appreciate all the help everyone's given. I'll have to stick with the shirt but I think I'll get a white shirt for the occasion. There goes another $80.

Navy suit. White shirt. Silver/grey grenadine.

Boom!

Regarding suspenders, there is a school of thought (that pre-dates Larry King) that says suspenders should NOT be coordinated with anything since a gentleman wouldn't be removing his jacket anyway. 😀

However, you're a kid at prom so why not pick out some suspenders that you think would be "fun" and/or would coordinate with your date's dress. Even ask her for a little "help" in picking them out. Have a good time.
